{"id":23108,"date":"2025-08-28T13:33:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T13:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23108"},"modified":"2025-08-28T13:33:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T13:33:44","slug":"the-malaysia-coffee-and-palm-oil-sectors-fast-track-eus-anti-deforestation-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/28\/the-malaysia-coffee-and-palm-oil-sectors-fast-track-eus-anti-deforestation-deadline\/","title":{"rendered":"The Malaysia coffee and palm oil sectors fast-track EU\u2019s anti-deforestation deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Malaysia is actively anticipating the&nbsp;European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) on especially coffee and palm oil exports after a year\u2019s moratorium.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 26, 2025, the Ministry of Commodities tightened&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/general\/3093966\/malaysia-makes-contingency-plans-for-agriculture-exports-under-eu-deforestation-rules\"><u>contingency plans<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to make mainstream industries responsible enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to claim the \u2018low risk\u2019 status on the&nbsp;December 30, 2025 deadline and&nbsp;enjoy moderate export inspections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia\u2019s current \u2018standard risk\u2019 status underlines inspections on 3% of its cocoa, soy, beef, coffee and palm exports under the EUDR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018high risk\u2019 category on the other hand attracts the toughest inspections -and currently comprises&nbsp;Russia, North Korea and Burma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deforestation Targets&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia is especially keen on the timber, oil palm and coffee sectors. The first two crops apparently contributed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco-business.com\/press-releases\/as-malaysia-earmarks-23-million-hectares-for-deforestation-countrys-forest-cover-could-drop-to-4735\/\"><u>41.6% and 15.5%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;local deforestation shares, respectively, in the 2017-21 period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oil palms occupy about 5.6 million hectares of land across the peninsula, especially in forested Sabah and Surawak states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee in its part is ironically experiencing an acreage downturn from 7,500 hectares in 2007 to 2,229 hectares in 2021. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In spite of low cultivation, deforestation still hounds coffee because of frequent global shortages that spur land expansion in key origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee drives 6% of all deforestation traceable to the EU\u2019s agricultural imports, according to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/efi.int\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/flegtredd\/Sustainable-cocoa-programme\/Factsheets\/EUDR_Coffee_Factsheet.pdf\"><u>EUDR factsheet<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southeast Asia, inclusive of Malaysia, Indonesia and&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/04\/vietnams-coffee-sector-prepares-for-eus-anti-\"><u>Vietnam<\/u><\/a>, represents 27% of the EU\u2019s coffee imports, as of 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, will Malaysia this time round make the low risk category after the 1-year grace period ends in December 2025? And will coffee and palm oil escape the net by meeting deforestation-free statuses? The below statistics look at the current profiles of both crops from an acreage or deforestation angle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-malaysia-coffee-and-palm-oil-deforestation-statistics\"><strong>Malaysia Coffee and Palm Oil Deforestation&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malay Peninsula and the Indonesia archipelago constitute 80% of southeast Asia\u2019s forestland. Out of this, Malaysia deforested some 349,244 hectares in the 2017-21 period, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco-business.com\/press-releases\/as-malaysia-earmarks-23-million-hectares-for-deforestation-countrys-forest-cover-could-drop-to-4735\/\"><u>RimbaWatch report<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of 2023. The agency furthermore indicates that clearing land for timber, coffee, cocoa and oil palm cultivation could claim 2.3 million hectares more. Some of the biggest culprits of deforestation in the 2017-21 period were timber (41.6%) and oil palms (15.5%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does coffee occupy much area in the Malay Peninsula?&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coffee is a relatively lucrative export for Malaysia, and although the plantation area is low, it remains prey to deforestation. In 2007, the crop occupied 7,500 hectares, which then plummeted to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aseancoffeeco.wordpress.com\/malaysia\/\"><u>5,140 hectares&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>(ha) in plantings, according to ASEAN Coffee. By 2021, acreage had turned into a fraction of the 2007 highs, at only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/money\/2021\/10\/01\/agriculture-dept-ready-to-assist-coffee-entrepreneurs-in-malaysia-says-depu\/2010018\"><u>2,229 ha<\/u><\/a>. Two areas control 89.7% of the national coffee area, namely Sabah with 46.7% and Johore with 43%. Small-scale farmers contribute around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aseancoffeeco.wordpress.com\/malaysia\/\"><u>99.4<\/u><\/a>% of total production in the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ho<\/strong><strong>w large is the oil palm area in Malaysia?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government of Malaysia puts the 2024 oil palm area in the country at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bepi.mpob.gov.my\/images\/area\/2024\/Area_summary2024.pdf\"><u>5,612,852&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>ha. &nbsp;90.2% of this cultivated swathe or 5,066,524 ha had mature trees while 9.7% or 546,327 ha had immature trees.
