{"id":23088,"date":"2025-08-26T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T09:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23088"},"modified":"2025-08-26T09:42:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T09:42:33","slug":"rooibos-from-south-africa-gains-mileage-in-east-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/26\/rooibos-from-south-africa-gains-mileage-in-east-asia\/","title":{"rendered":"Rooibos from South Africa gains mileage in East Asia \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rooibos love is drifting into the Far-East, helping make this specialty tea represent a third of all niche exports from South Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late August 2025, producers of this caffeine-free cultivar vowed to up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/sunday-times-daily\/business\/2025-08-26-rooibos-producers-look-to-bag-alternative-markets-as-us-tariffs-hit\/\"><u>exports to Japan&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>to stem the 30% U.S.\u2019 tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States ranks fifth among SA\u2019s export destinations for this tea at nearly 4,361 tonnes, as of 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to tariffs, the focus is shifting to trade-friendly markets in the Far-east, one of which already the top destination. This is destination Japan, which in 2018 imported 2,000 tonnes of Rooibos but by 2024 had escalated to 21,153 tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tea currently enjoys a select export club of 50 countries, mostly in the European Union (EU). Exports to these 50 markets rose from 5,900 tonnes in 2015 to 9,700 tonnes in 2024, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyinvestor.com\/south-africa\/98460\/south-african-tea-taking-the-world-by-storm\/\"><u>Daily Investor<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regionally, Botswana (2% export share) and Zimbabwe (1% share) offer a safe net for South Africa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-rooibos\"><strong>What is Rooibos?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rooibos is an indigenous tea from the&nbsp;<em>Aspalathus linearis&nbsp;<\/em>shrub that grows in Cederburg, Western Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is exceptional from the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/theaceae\/camellia-sinensis\/\"><em><u><em>Camellia sinensis<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a>&nbsp;or conventional tea plant for its deep scarlet tinge instead of green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its top&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/south-africa\/green-tea\/\"><u>selling point<\/u><\/a>, however, is a lack of caffeine, which fuels its love by people fighting weight problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many lovers of \u00a0herbal beverages of this kind are in yoga-inclined nations such as China, Japan and Sri Lanka. Although China grows a similar tea from Yunnan known as\u00a0<em>Pu-erh<\/em>, \u00a0the country hails the South African rival as a natural pacifier.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, exports to Japan, the EU and African nations target mostly health-conscious upper middle class buyers. It is this buyers\u2019 niche that helped increase shipments by 64% between 2015 and 2024. And as the statistics below show, Rooibos is a rarity pushing the boundaries of a rather low profile local tea industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-south-africa-tea-statistics\"><strong>South Africa Tea&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although South Africa is not a \u00a0major producer of tea, it has some of the most sought after teas. One of these is Rooibos, a red tea from the Weberg Mountains in Western Cape. This specialty currently makes up 1\/3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0of the tea market of the country. This was an improvement by 7.6% from the 2023 marketing season. Despite this high ranking as an exporter, the country remains a net importer as well: in 2024, tea and coffee imports grew by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/06\/26\/3105690\/0\/en\/South-Africa-Tea-and-Coffee-Industry-Report-2025-Rooibos-and-Honeybush-Make-Waves-as-Health-Conscious-Alternatives.html\">10%<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where does South Africa export Rooibos<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, the country exported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyinvestor.com\/south-africa\/98460\/south-african-tea-taking-the-world-by-storm\/\"><u>65,529.5 tonnes\u00a0<\/u><\/a>of Rooibos. Japan led the tally at 21,153.5 tonnes or a 26% share while Germany followed at 15,167.5 tonnes or a 19% share.
