{"id":23081,"date":"2025-08-25T09:36:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T09:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23081"},"modified":"2025-08-25T09:40:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T09:40:27","slug":"tomato-harvest-in-california-halfway-through-by-8th-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/25\/tomato-harvest-in-california-halfway-through-by-8th-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomato harvest in California halfway through by week 8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As of August 21, 2025, producers in California were halfway through their processing tomato harvest and expecting gains in coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s Processing Tomato Advisory Board (PTAB) recorded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tomatonews.com\/california-crop-situation-as-of-21-august\/\"><u>846,707 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in deliveries in the just ended 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;harvest week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0week on August 28, deliveries will apparently hit 845,278 tonnes, bringing the provisional tally to 5,300,269 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This estimate indicates the lowest Week 9 of the harvest in the last three years, down by some -11% margin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are mixed expectations, however, for the final harvest totals &#8211; either for low hauls or record surpluses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some processors think it might be hard to achieve the May 2025 forecast by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). On May 29, the NASS predicted 2025 production at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Statistics_by_State\/California\/Publications\/Specialty_and_Other_Releases\/Tomatoes\/2025\/202505ptom.pdf\"><u>10.3 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on a pre-production contract basis, a -7% yearly fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PTAB in its part predicts a final production surplus beyond the above target, to at least 10.5 million tonnes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-price-impact-despite-suspension-agreement-ongoing-harvest\"><strong>No Price Impact Despite Suspension Agreement &amp; Ongoing Harvest&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, neither California\u2019s harvest nor an import agreement termination with the key origin of Mexico has lowered market rates. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In actuality, since the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/15\/tomatoes-from-mexico-get-17-09-tariffs-and-a-price-tag\/\"><u>termination<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA) with Mexico on July 14, 2025, prices have steadied.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspension slapped 17.09% duty on cross-border imports, whose impact is still slow owing to the increasing production stateside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the East and West Coast of the United States normally pick tomatoes in summer, just when Mexico\u2019s production downsizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts therefore expect the suspension to fully bear on the sector late 2025 when output in California declines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Field tomatoes were costing $1.793 a pound in July 2025, up from June\u2019s &nbsp;$1.737, per the Federal Reserve Bank, St. Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, the California Tomato Growers Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/ctga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Tomato_Bulletin-April-28-2025.pdf\"><u>CTGA<\/u><\/a>) had on April 28, 2025 settled on a processor company base price of $109 a tonne. The Base price is different from the Organic price, which the association had not yet decided on this date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, as the California tomato harvest gets halfway, producers are recording steady contractual production targets and steady&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/tomatoes\/\"><u>market prices<\/u><\/a>. Since the mid-2000s, the state has averaged between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Statistics_by_State\/California\/Publications\/Specialty_and_Other_Releases\/Tomatoes\/2025\/202505ptom.pdf\"><u>10.1 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;tonnes (2006) and 14.3 million tonnes (2015) of processed &nbsp;tomatoes. The vegetable grows mainly in the San Joaquin, Sacramento and Central Valleys of the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>H<\/strong><strong>as California\u2019s tomato acreage changed much in the two decades ending 2025?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While California has enjoyed steady acreage since 2006, some years have shown dramatic rises. These include 2009 when acreage picked at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Statistics_by_State\/California\/Publications\/Specialty_and_Other_Releases\/Tomatoes\/2025\/202505ptom.pdf\"><u>312,000 hectares<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(ha), out of which 308,000 ha underwent harvest.
