{"id":23059,"date":"2025-08-20T09:40:50","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T09:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23059"},"modified":"2025-08-20T09:44:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T09:44:01","slug":"cocoa-farmers-in-ghana-go-slow-on-new-2025-26-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/20\/cocoa-farmers-in-ghana-go-slow-on-new-2025-26-price\/","title":{"rendered":"Cocoa farmers in Ghana go slow on new 2025-26 price\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Farmers in Ghana are half-heartedly acclimatizing to new farm-gate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/ghana\/cocoa-beans\/\"><u>cocoa rates<\/u><\/a>\u00a0despite receiving a 4% annual raise for the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cocoa Board of Ghana (Cocobod) announced the price at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/furtherafrica.com\/2025\/08\/20\/ghanas-cocoa-sector-faces-farmer-backlash-over-low-price-hike\/\"><u>51,660 cedi&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>($4,784) a tonne on August 4 amid high expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the positive welcome soured, as new nominal price of 3,228 cedi ($294.72) per 64 kg falls below producers\u2019 cost net.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By August 19, 2025, a union that represents 300,000 smallholders was threatening to prevent Cocobod from visiting member farms. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The representatives also opined that the state has barely met 70% of the free-on-board (FOB) cost mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theophilus Tamakloe, VP at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehighstreetjournal.com\/300000-cocoa-farmers-threaten-smuggling\/\"><u>Ghana Co-operative Cocoa Farmers &amp; Marketing Association<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;suggested a FOB-representative rate of 3,800 cedi ($348.46)\/64 kg.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new prices apparently do not absorb a tide of rising input expenses such as fertilizers, which eat into profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The double raise also falls short of that in Ivory Coast, the world\u2019s top cocoa bean producer. Here, farmers are getting around 187,283 CFA Francs (3,635 cedi, $331.88) per 64 kg.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smuggle-to-ivory-coast\"><strong>Smuggle to Ivory Coast?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With&nbsp;differences widening between producer unions and the government, the threat of smuggling hangs palpably over the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024\u2019s Best Cocoa Farmer, Kwame Alex, tells local media that Ivory Coast currently betters Ghana by 700 cedis ($63.63)\/tonne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports already indicate that growers in<a href=\"https:\/\/kessbenonline.com\/2025\/08\/19\/price-difference-of-cocoa-between-ghana-the-ivory-coast-is-now-ghc700-the-residents-of-jaman-south-are-now-sneaking-to-the-ivory-coast-to-sell-their-cocoa-andrew-bediako-reveals\/\"><u>\u00a0Jaman South<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in the Bono Region of Ghana are already diverting cocoa across the border.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this is happening despite the current home rate being above the\u00a0<u><a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/04\/10\/ghana-retains-cocoa-price-for-2025-26-seaso\">2024-25 season\u2019s<\/a><\/u> 48,000 Cedi ($3,062) a tonne. The below statistics offer an extra look at the local pricing history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ghana-cocoa-farmers-price-statistics\"><strong>Ghana Cocoa Farmers\u2019 Price&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every start of the season in September, the Cocoa Board of Ghana (Cocobod) provides a contractual producer price.
