{"id":23012,"date":"2025-08-12T13:36:49","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T13:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23012"},"modified":"2025-08-12T13:36:50","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T13:36:50","slug":"nigeria-sugars-down-import-bill-with-400000-tonne-production-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/12\/nigeria-sugars-down-import-bill-with-400000-tonne-production-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria sugars down import bill with 400,000-tonne production deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) of Nigeria\u00a0on August 11, 2025\u00a0charged four companies with 400,000 tonnes of processed sugars to undercut imports.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria imports 1.4 million tonnes of the agro-commodity annually, as of 2023, 60 times its current production capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To offset dependence, the NSDC is ramping up domestic production, beginning with an August 5&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/05\/the-nigeria-sugar-industry-tests-a-compelling\"><u>sugar roadmap<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; and now this latest deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deal allows four firms to develop four cane belt factories and each produce 100,000 tonnes of the sweetener annually.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operations will include Brent Sugar in the southwestern state of Oyo and Legacy Sugar in the northwestern state of Adamawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two more mills in the country\u2019s northeast will further help equate production distribution across Nigeria\u2019s vast geographical span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful operations will bring the total refined sugar output to nearly 450,000 tonnes or a third of current imports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the NSDC is investing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/business-services\/nsdc-four-new-operators-partner-to-produce-400000mt-of-sugar-yearly\/\"><u>$1-billion&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in the construction of around 5 mills by a contractor from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mills will help consummate the national designation of 2025 as the year of \u201caccelerated development\u201d for the sensitive sweeteners sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sensitiveness is gaining in tandem with growing sugar intake countrywide, which rose to 1.6 million tonnes in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Nigeria is battling sugar demons holistically to boost production and cut imports. This at a time when the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/08\/sugar-and-cereals-counter-strong-global-food-prices-in-june-2025\/\"><u>FAO Price Index\u00a0<\/u><\/a>ironically indicates price depreciation in both June and July 2025 from a global surplus. A look at the statistics below explains Nigeria\u2019s opposite trend and how it is revamping production.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nigeria-sugars-processing-statistics\"><strong>Nigeria Sugars Processing&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite consuming 1\/3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;or<a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/business-services\/nsdc-pitches-opportunity-in-sugar-production-to-investors-farmers\/\"><u>&nbsp;$2 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of Africa\u2019s total sugar intake per year, Nigeria struggles in processing sufficient quantities. Against demand at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsdcnigeria.org\/nigeria-sugar-data\/\"><u>1.6 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a year (2021), the country produces barely a trickle at&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>34,150 tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>(2021).
