{"id":23007,"date":"2025-08-12T09:52:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T09:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=23007"},"modified":"2025-08-12T09:54:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T09:54:32","slug":"the-egypt-sweet-potato-marketing-season-starts-with-weekly-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/12\/the-egypt-sweet-potato-marketing-season-starts-with-weekly-lead\/","title":{"rendered":"The Egypt sweet potato marketing season starts with weekly lead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After shipping 1.3 million tonnes of potatoes halfway through 2025, Egypt is already exploiting weekly exports of rival tuber, the sweet potato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just after the August-January marketing season begun, sweet potato shipments topped the weekly agricultural dispatches ending August 10, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.amwalalghad.com\/egypt-exports-170k-tons-of-food-in-one-week-nfsa\/\"><u>Amwal Alghad<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;news, quoting the National Food Safety Authority (NSFA), the tuber led vegetable shipments at 7,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following suit were potatoes at 6,000 tonnes, indicating lasting resilience late into its marketing season that ends in October.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week\u2019s tally comes from consignment data by 1,200 export firms, which shipped 650 different agricultural items totaling 3,470 dispatches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wider span of six months, Egypt exported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/egyptian-gazette.com\/egypt\/egypts-agricultural-exports-reach-6-5-mn-tons-so-far\/\"><u>6.5 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in agricultural goods, 0.6 million tonnes above 2024\u2019s. This according to a report by the Minister of Agriculture &amp; Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, before August 7, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-orange-fleshed-tuber-reigns-in-europe\"><strong>Orange-fleshed Tuber Reigns in Europe<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All eyes are currently on the sweet potato season, which will run undisputed till January, spot on destination Europe. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because rivals the United States and South Africa are in the low season, Egypt wills to stop the supply gap.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, the North African country enjoys diverse sweet potato (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/convolvulaceae\/ipomoea-batatas\/\"><em><u><em>Ipomoea batatas<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a>)\u00a0varieties that include the orange-fleshed Beauregard. This cultivar has in recent years emerged a favorite in emerging markets in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the USDA\u2019s Foreign Agricultural Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Overview%20of%20the%20Egyptian%20Sweetpotato%20Market%20-%202025_Cairo_Egypt_EG2025-0022.pdf\"><u>FAS<\/u><\/a>), Egypt ranked third in sweet potato exports to the EU in January-February 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In just those two months, volumes to the EU crossed 35,224 tonnes, overtaking those of the whole year 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2021, however, Cairo has mastered the EU market, with annual volumes quadrupling to 150,000 tonnes by 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Netherlands has become the single biggest recipient of Cairo\u2019s orange-fleshed tuber, representing&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/09\/05\/egypts-new-sweet-potato-export-season-\"><u>50% of supplies,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as of 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will there be a shining repeat in the coming 2025-26 export season for the sweet potato of Egypt? The statistics below attempt an answer to the query, by turning back through time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-egypt-sweet-potato-statistics\"><strong>Egypt Sweet Potato&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Egypt is not among the top 10 sweet potato-producing countries, it is nevertheless a top 5 exporter. The country came 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;worldwide in 2023 with exports totaling 101,042 tonnes. Only the Netherlands and the U.S. sold more that year, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/trade\/comtrade\/en\/country\/All\/year\/2023\/tradeflow\/Exports\/partner\/WLD\/product\/071420\"><u>World Bank<\/u><\/a>. Ironically, the Netherlands, a major re-exporter, received 50% or 42,000 tonnes of Egypt\u2019s sweet potato exports in 2022. In the 2023 context, Egypt upped its game by emerging a major international supplier, with export values hitting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Overview%20of%20the%20Egyptian%20Sweetpotato%20Market%20-%202025_Cairo_Egypt_EG2025-0022.pdf\"><u>$181.8 million<\/u><\/a>. The European Union (EU) market, especially, accelerated export volumes for Egypt from just 35,224 tonnes (2020) to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Overview%20of%20the%20Egyptian%20Sweetpotato%20Market%20-%202025_Cairo_Egypt_EG2025-0022.pdf\"><u>149,551 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by 2024. These exports could be better if the production did not fluctuate so much, per the data sections below:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;has Egypt\u2019s sweet potato production performed in the 2020-23 period?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>FAOSTAT<\/u><\/a>, Egypt saw rapid variations in production between 2020 and 2023.
