{"id":22949,"date":"2025-08-01T13:35:05","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T13:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22949"},"modified":"2025-08-01T13:37:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T13:37:32","slug":"the-angola-corn-soy-sectors-cut-new-swathes-via-foreign-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/08\/01\/the-angola-corn-soy-sectors-cut-new-swathes-via-foreign-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"The Angola corn, soy sectors cut new swathes via foreign investment\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Angola in July 2025 welcomed successive corn\/maize (<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/poaceae\/zea-mays\/\"><em><u><em>Zea mays<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a>) and soybean investments across 130,000 acres by two companies from China.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-21\/china-s-citic-to-develop-large-soybean-corn-farms-in-angola\"><u>Bloomberg<\/u><\/a>, Citic Construction Co. will invest $250 million in cereal\/oilseed cultivation on 100,000 acres of land, up to 2030. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trailblazing Sinohydro company also inked a $100-million contract to construct a large grain corridor,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chinaglobalsouth.com\/podcasts\/china-angola-agriculture-strategy\/\"><u>60%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of whose output for export to China.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-redeeming-corn-production\"><strong>Redeeming Corn Production<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As Beijing invests in alternative food import bases in these trade war times, it will boost Angola\u2019s currently insufficient corn production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/ipad.fas.usda.gov\/countrysummary\/default.aspx?id=AO\"><u>USDA<\/u><\/a>) estimates 2024-25\u2019s corn production in Angola at 2.2 million tonnes, below the 2019-24 average of 2.889 million tonnes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, maize\/corn output in the 2025-26 period will rise to 3 million tonnes, according to the same report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual demand clocks 4.5 million tonnes, necessitating imports of 50% of all national corn needs from mainly Brazil and South Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fast-tracking-the-soy-area\"><strong>Fast-tracking<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;the Soy Area<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another export crop with low cultivation footprint but high potential is soy &#8211; no wonder China\u2019s ongoing investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crop has nevertheless been attracting steady acreage lately, at&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>42,920 hectares<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2023, per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With China\u2019s Sinohydro and Citic dramatically expanding investments, the cultivated area could grow exponentially.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In totality, investments might reduce reliance on imports of both corn and soy. Conversely, Angola imports around $148 million of soy and vegetable oil each year from the United States alone. For a more holistic review of the soy and corn sectors in the South African country, skim the following statistics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-angola-corn-soy-statistics\"><strong>Angola Corn\/Soy&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Angola is one of the most food import-reliant nations on earth, with inbound shipments representative of 50% of national consumption. This is despite the country boasting 58 million hectares (ha) of undeveloped agricultural land and 35 million ha more of arable land. This information is courtesy of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/knowledge-product\/angola-agricultural-equipment\"><u>International Trade Administration<\/u><\/a>, in a 2025 report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the cultivated land portion, corn in Angola covered&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>2.797 million ha<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2023 while soy 42,920 ha. Of this domestic total, nominal consumption was at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/knowledge-product\/angola-agricultural-equipment\"><u>4.5 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, which means 50% of the total shipped from abroad. Some other estimates however put domestic annual corn utilization at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alcaalangola.com\/en\/malanje-leads-corn-production-in-the-country\/\"><u>10 million tonnes.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do<\/strong><strong>es soy oil have potential in Angola<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angola imports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Angola%20Exporter%20Guide_Luanda_Angola_AO2023-0002.pdf\"><u>$148 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in annual soy\/vegetable oils from the United States alone, which indicates high soy sector potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where do soybeans grow in Angola<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angola has generally fertile plains, most of it undeveloped, that can facilitate soybean cultivation.
