The document showed that 93% of U.S.-based companies from China leased land in Utah and four other states. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these other states is Missouri, which is considering a ban on the 1% cap for land it allows foreign owners. If this happens, the top pork processor in China, WH Group, could lose 40,000 acres at its ex-Smithfield Foods operation in MI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news development comes in the wake of President Trump\u2019s National Farm Security Action Plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on July 8 further stated an intention to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/10\/usda-aims-block-china-from-owning-us-farmland\/84519165007\/\"><u>ban and reclaim China&#8217;s land ownership&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>over national security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan seeks to prevent infiltration by trade foes that hold 1% of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/resources\/economic-policy-analysis\/afida\/annual-reports\/foreign-holdings-us-agricultural-land-december-31-2023\"><u>2% foreign-owned federal land<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An independent tally shows that China actually leases just 0.02% of the total agricultural land under foreign hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/11\/30\/arizonas-foreign-alfalfa-leases-at-stake-amid-groundwater-shortage\/\"><u>international alfalfa growers<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;growers in Arizona lead the foreign ownership by far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solar-companies-stateside-retreat\"><strong>Solar Companies\u2019 Stateside Retreat<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, solar entities from China have begun backing down from the U.S.\u00a0following a recent levy-and-spending bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Business\/Energy\/Chinese-solar-companies-shrink-US-footprint-as-Trump-cuts-incentives\"><u>Nikkei Asia<\/u><\/a>, China\u2019s Trina Solar alongside JA Solar sold off their panel industries between January and July 2025. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The retreat could also influence other firms that have come to exploit prospects of the number 2 biggest global energy user.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does the land and solar issue now hint that stateside farms by China are dying off? \u00a0The below statistics take the fight further through data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-statistics-on-china-farms-operations-in-the-united-states\"><strong>Statistics on China Farms\u2019 Operations in the United States&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By December 31, 2023, almost 45 million acres of U.S.\u2019 agricultural land were under foreign investments. This is according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/resources\/economic-policy-analysis\/afida\/annual-reports\/foreign-holdings-us-agricultural-land-december-31-2023\"><u>AFIDA report<\/u><\/a>. The report further stated that this acreage represented 3.5% of all private landholding nationally. In marginal terms, forestry represented 48% of all foreign acreage while crop- and pasture-land accounted for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsa.usda.gov\/resources\/economic-policy-analysis\/afida\/annual-reports\/foreign-holdings-us-agricultural-land-december-31-2023\"><u>29% and 21%<\/u><\/a>, respectively. Out of this total acreage, China by end 2023 held&nbsp;0.02%&nbsp;of foreign landholding in the U.S. According to an American Farm Bureau (FB) tally, this portion totaled up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/foreign-footprints-trends-in-u-s-agricultural-land-ownership\"><u>277,336 acres<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;that year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;does China compare with other foreign land investors in the United States?<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u00a02023, China was at least the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0biggest overseas owner of land in the United States. According to an FB tally, Canada led the 2023 ownership claim\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/foreign-footprints-trends-in-u-s-agricultural-land-ownership\"><u>with a 1.21% share<\/u><\/a>\u00a0followed by the Netherlands with 0.41%. With its 0.02% share, China trailed the likes of Belgium (0.03%) and Spain (0.02%). \u00a0Conversely, other political adversaries of the U.S. still own land stateside: Venezuela held\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/foreign-footprints-trends-in-u-s-agricultural-land-ownership\"><u>90,291 acres<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in 2023, Iran 3,030 acres, Cuba 58 acres and Russia 11 acres. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do companies from China farm in the U.S.<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the\u00a0biggest agricultural concerns by Sino-American companies on federal land is pork production and solar energy installations.
