{"id":22799,"date":"2025-07-10T13:31:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T13:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22799"},"modified":"2025-07-10T13:34:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T13:34:14","slug":"rollins-usda-thwart-the-reopening-of-cattle-imports-from-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/10\/rollins-usda-thwart-the-reopening-of-cattle-imports-from-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"Rollins, USDA thwart the reopening of cattle imports from Mexico\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S.&#8217; Ag secretary Brooke Rollins has again passed advisory against cattle crossings from Mexico over fresh screwworm larvae cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is happening just a few days after a two-month closure of cattle shipments from Mexico beginning May 11 ended on July 7, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Agriculture Secretary on July 9 announced the fresh closure after a herd newly turned positive for New World Screwworm (NWS).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/countylocalnews.com\/2025\/07\/10\/usda-shuts-southern-border-livestock-trade-over-screwworm-usda-livestock-trade-restrictions-new-world-screwworm-outbreak-2025-southern-border-agriculture-impact\/\"><u>We are pausing the planned port reopening,<\/u><\/a>\u201d partially read her statement, extending the live cattle, horse and bison import halt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerning the newest ban, secretary Rollins said it was a selective process that targeted certain entry ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that the USDA must witness extra progress in containing NWS, especially in Mexico\u2019s Veracruz state, before any livestock admittance northward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her agency has enjoined farmers to ensure that imported cattle on their farms have undergone&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/countylocalnews.com\/2025\/07\/10\/usda-shuts-southern-border-livestock-trade-over-screwworm-usda-livestock-trade-restrictions-new-world-screwworm-outbreak-2025-southern-border-agriculture-impact\/\"><u>inspections<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The turnaround came as a shock after successful diplomacy had briefly coerced the U.S.\u2019 administration to resume the cross-border trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insiders had connected the reopening to efforts by both sides to control screwworm, whose larvae devour open animal flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beef Pricing in Rollins\u2019 Wake<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By extending the livestock import moratorium, it seems like the United States has called its bluff on currently costly beef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Mexico ships about 1 million cows annually to the U.S., as of 2024, any stoppage favors undersupply, with pricing ramifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of May 2025 when the ban was in its maiden month, American ground beef&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/06\/27\/ground-beef-price-in-the-united-states-beefs\"><u>soared in pricing by 16%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;year-on-year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minced beef &nbsp;averaged a record $5.98 a pound in May 2025, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will the screwworm threat undermine\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/beef\/\">American beef pricing<\/a><\/u> norm, and will the USDA attain its containment aims as it has done historically? The statistics below explore some of the possible answers to the query.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-statistics-on-screwworm-containment\"><strong>Statistics on Screwworm Containment \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The New World Screwworm (NWS) first got mention in the United States\u2019 Southwest in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/exhibits\/speccoll\/exhibits\/show\/stop-screwworms--selections-fr\/1930s\"><u>early 1930s<\/u><\/a>. By 1933, it widened its reach to the southeast in the Carolina (s), Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. Mitigation efforts at the time aimed to educate farmers on keeping cattle wound-free. Civilian corps also rode ranges to ensure no cattle had wounds on them that could attract NWS larvae. By 2024, annual NWS containment efforts by the USDA included awarding ranchers<a href=\"https:\/\/tscra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024-11-2_NWS-SituationReport.pdf\"><u>&nbsp;$1 billion&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in direct benefits and $3.7 billion industry-wide. Between mid-2023 and October 2024, the agency had utilised&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tscra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/2024-11-2_NWS-SituationReport.pdf\"><u>$54 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;out of &nbsp;$109.8 million emergency fund to combat NWS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning 1954, the United States has been eradicating NWS both at home and regionally. The first eradication program was in Curacao in 1954 while the initial home effort ran 1957-59 in the American southeast. The data below, courtesy of the USDA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/screwworm_rrg.pdf\"><u>APHIS Veterinary Services<\/u><\/a>, tackles the containment duration by a U.S.\u2019 region or Latin American country:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1960-66<\/em>: Southwest U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1975<\/em>: Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1972-91<\/em>: Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1911-95<\/em>: El Salvador and Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1995-2000<\/em>: Cost Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>2016 and beyond<\/em>: Southeast U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;many times has the U.S. detected NWS?<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of &nbsp;three decades ending 2016, the United States had detected NWS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/screwworm_rrg.pdf\"><u>27 times<\/u><\/a>.
