{"id":22740,"date":"2025-07-01T13:28:41","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T13:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22740"},"modified":"2025-07-01T13:28:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T13:28:42","slug":"sugar-prices-in-new-york-retreat-upon-july-2025-contract-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/07\/01\/sugar-prices-in-new-york-retreat-upon-july-2025-contract-deadline\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugar prices in New York retreat upon July 2025 contract deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New York sugar futures on July 1, 2025 recorded declines in prices on the final delivery date of July\u201925 contracts from oversupply fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sugar #11 or bulk raw cane sugar in New York lost by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/sugar-prices-plunge-ny-july-futures-contract-expires\"><u>-2.09%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;daily, early on the July 1 deadline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same fate overshadowed the much-traded sugar #5 or bulk raw white sugar in London, by -2.43% day-on-day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 3.48 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>, bulk sugar was fetching&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/commodities\/sugar-price?op=1\"><u>$0.16 a pound<\/u><\/a>, a 4 1\/4-month low.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rush by traders to meet deadlines stoked oversupply surmises amid ebbing demand for sugar, further pressuring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/sugar\/\"><u>U.S.\u2019 sugar prices<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sugar-16-and-oversupply\"><strong>Sugar # 16 and Oversupply<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Oversupply concerns are mainly foreign-related and apply to the relatively expensive sugar #16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No.16 refers to raw sugar for physical delivery to mainly New York from inside the United States or from duty-free foreign origins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By July 1, 2025, this type was selling lowly at $34.75 a pound, a -6.71% 52-week drop, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barchart.com\/futures\/quotes\/SDF26\/historical-prices?orderBy=contractExpirationDate&amp;orderDir=asc\"><u>Barchart.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One major source of #16 is Mexico, which currently has an annual production boost of 7% for the 2025-26 season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/crops\/sugar-and-sweeteners\/market-outlook\"><u>USDA<\/u><\/a>) cites that Mexico has a \u201csuspension agreement\u201d with the United States. The friendly protocol will therefore allow cross-border sugar exports into the U.S. to stay high at 572,489 tonnes in 2025-26.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uptick 2025-26 production in Mexico to 5.094 million tonnes might also counterbalance American production, which is down to 13.773 million short tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, trade outlook hinges upon a 2025-26&nbsp;<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/05\/27\/global-sugar-surplus-glues-prices-to-\u00a217-cen\"><u>global surplus<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by 4.7% year-on-year, which is bearish on prices. To unravel pricing patterns, the statistics below use a specific review of sugar no.16, pertaining to NY. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-york-sugar-no-16-prices-statistics\"><strong>New York Sugar No.16 Prices Statistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sugar #16 refers to American sugar for physical delivery or duty-free imports via mainly the New York port. It remains perhaps the most price-sensitive sugar contract type. This is because its physical delivery basis determines final consumer pricing of the sweetener. As of June 27, 2025, its price was at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/commodities\/ice-us-sugar-16-c1-futures\"><u>$0.3501 a pound<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;while that of raw bulk sugar was around $0.16 a pound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has sugar no.16 performed in NY and American markets in the recent past<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/PSUGAUSAUSDQ\"><u>Federal Reserve Bank, St. Louis<\/u><\/a>, #16 was cheapest between 1990 and 2025 in Q1 2000, at $0.1770 a pound. On the flip side, it reached its intermediate peak in the 1990-2025 period in Q3 2011, at $0.3893 a pound. Then it broke the bank at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/PSUGAUSAUSDQ\"><u>$0.4298<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a pound in Q4 2023, before it slid to $0.3695 in Q1 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What was mid-2025 pricing of sugar #16<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Q1 2025, no.16 has continually fallen, to settle at around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barchart.com\/futures\/quotes\/SDF26\/historical-prices?orderBy=contractExpirationDate&amp;orderDir=asc\"><u>$0.3475<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;per pound in early July 2025. &nbsp;Part of the price pressure owes to projections of a 2025-26&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wallstreetwaves.com\/decline-in-ny-sugar-prices-as-july-contract-deadline-approaches\/\"><u>global sugar surplus<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by 4.7% year-on-year, to 189.318 tonnes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York sugar futures on July 1, 2025 recorded declines in prices on the final delivery date of July\u201925 contracts from oversupply fears.
