{"id":22676,"date":"2025-06-19T10:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22676"},"modified":"2025-06-19T10:07:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:07:26","slug":"u-pick-strawberry-season-getting-huge-in-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/06\/19\/u-pick-strawberry-season-getting-huge-in-michigan\/","title":{"rendered":"U-pick strawberry season getting huge in Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Strawberry farms in Michigan in the northern United States offering u-pick services to buyers are witnessing a glut 2025 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the middle part of the state such as Fenton to the southeastern Monroe County, early picking is in full swing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late-May-to-early-July statewide season will help land the annual average of 50 billion pounds of fresh berries in MI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This harvest strategically comes a few months after a February 2025 hailstorm cut supplies in the federal production heartland of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/02\/21\/a-california-strawberry-freeze-spikes-market-demand\/\"><u>California<\/u><\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mid-south-east-michigan\"><strong>Mid<\/strong> &amp; <strong>South-east Michigan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It all starts in middle MI, where customer Kara Kinser told WXYZ news that she has \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/voices\/theyre-very-juicy-u-pick-strawberry-season-is-officially-here\"><u>been doing this since I was five<\/u><\/a>.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kinser was reaping u-pick berries on Fenton-based Spicer Orchards fields in readiness to make strawberry pies, shortcakes and other summer bites.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spicer Orchards is a 300-acre family farm that dedicates some 10 acres to strawberry patches, whose picking duration lasts about 3 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By late June, temperatures in Michigan usually notch up to 80\u00baF (26.6\u00baC), ripening the remaining berries and speeding up the harvest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, u-pickers like Kinser are bagging their berries at $3.95 a pound or $40 per flat. This \u00a0\u00a0affordable\u00a0<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/strawberries\/\"><u>farm-gate rate<\/u><\/a>\u00a0reflects the current production largesse.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other farms that average a fortnight of picking apiece cut across southeast Michigan, especially in Monroe County on the shores of Lake Erie.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some warmer parts of Monroe County started their harvest late May while others await their June berries to ripen before July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One currently going harvest is on Stotz Berry Farm, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monroenews.com\/story\/news\/2025\/06\/18\/strawberries-picking-season-in-monroe-county\/84232025007\/\"><u>Monroe News<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;cites grows Jewel strawberries that customers can handpick or buy pre-picked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the management, the farm has since the start of picking on June 11 managed to sell 4,000 quarts (3,760 kg).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lake-michigan-area\"><strong>Lake Michigan Area<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And in Manistee County in northwest Michigan, stark on Lake Michigan, picking is getting on well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The county leads in strawberry acreage in the state with 83 acres as of 2022, while Monroe above, is 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/articles\/strawberry-season-farms-offer-pick-151128937.html\"><u>24 acres<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farms around Lake Michigan that are offering u-pick services range from Scherrer in St. Joseph to Bixby Farms in Berrien Springs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, warming weather is accelerating an already successful early u-pick strawberry harvest in MI. But how does the state compare with others in its total production? Below statistics attempt an answer to the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-michigan-strawberry-and-u-pick-farms-statistics\"><strong>Michigan Strawberry and U-Pick Farms Statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern state of Michigan is among the ten biggest strawberry states in the U.S. It ranked 7th in 2022 in terms of acreage with an orchard area extending&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20U.S.%20Department%20of%20Agriculture%2C%20Manistee,from%202022%2C%20which%20is%20collected%20every%20five%20years.\"><u>875 acres<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;Production, which is equal to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/essfeed.com\/top-10-strawberry-producing-states-in-the-usa\/\"><u>0.5%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of the federal output, ranks in the eighth position, as of 2022. Comparatively, Michigan\u2019s strawberry harvest in 2022 clocked 50 million pounds, against leader California\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/essfeed.com\/top-10-strawberry-producing-states-in-the-usa\/\"><u>1.5 billion pounds<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which counties top strawberry acreage in Michigan<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20U.S.%20Department%20of%20Agriculture%2C%20Manistee,from%202022%2C%20which%20is%20collected%20every%20five%20years.\"><u>MLive<\/u><\/a>, Manistee County in the northwest parts of the state led acreage at 83 acres in 2022.
