{"id":22655,"date":"2025-06-17T09:38:57","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T09:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22655"},"modified":"2025-06-17T09:38:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T09:38:58","slug":"the-africa-sugar-output-heading-to-a-0-8-million-tonne-surplus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/06\/17\/the-africa-sugar-output-heading-to-a-0-8-million-tonne-surplus\/","title":{"rendered":"The Africa sugar output heading to a 0.8 million-tonne surplus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>2024-25 sugar production in Africa will gain 0.8 million tonnes, projects the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in mid-2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAO\u2019s report puts continental sugar output at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecofinagency.com\/news-agriculture\/1606-47286-africas-sugar-output-to-rise-by-800-000-tons-in-2024\/2025-season\"><u>10.4 million tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>before the culmination of the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tipping the scales will be the Nile irrigator, Egypt, with 2.6 million tonnes, alongside Morocco and Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Kenya\u2019s annual production will scale up by 60% to 0.8 million tonnes, Morocco\u2019s will grow 100% to 0.4 million tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Production in Kenya first\u00a0<a href=\" www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/08\/22\/sugar-price-reprieve-in-kenya-after-supplies-re\"><u>revamped in Quarter 3, 2024<\/u><\/a>\u00a0after months of dormancy, following\u00a0sugarcane sector reforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-world-surplus\"><strong>A World Surplus<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The continental levels are in tandem with global trends. Although the FAO expects 2024-25 worldwide output to dip by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/c072da8c-d235-40e6-943d-93c4c2d0bae7\/content\"><u>1.1%<\/u><\/a>, surplus will come from high annual carryover stocks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumption will exceed the record 2023-24 equivalent of 176 million tonnes to a new 178.1 million tonnes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this utilization will barely scratch the surface of production at 180.3 million tonnes, plus the ending stocks at 122.3 million tonnes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, surplus will continue to be bearish, with prices still low since their initial fall in August 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International market rates have intermittently lowered from over US\u00a222 per pound in January 2024 to around US\u00a217 in May 2025. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-import-prices-benefit-nigeria\"><strong>Low Import Prices Benefit Nigeria<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Africa\u2019s major consumer markets such as Nigeria are taking advantage of low&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/nigeria\/sugar\/\"><u>import prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by converting margins from big volumes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traders here are profiteering from low quotations from the main source, Brazil, the supplier of 96% of Nigeria\u2019s imported sugar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the beneficiaries is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nairametrics.com\/2025\/06\/11\/falling-sugar-prices-to-boost-profits-for-dangote-sugar-bua-and-golden-penny\/\"><u>Dangote<\/u><\/a>\u00a0mills by the wealthy entrepreneur, one of the biggest utilizer of import volumes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is therefore a surplus year for the sugar sector in Africa and a blow for global prices. Below statistics take the debate further by recounting continental sweeteners&#8217; totals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-africa-sugar-statistics\"><strong>Africa Sugar Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sub-tropical regions such as Africa, Asia and South America produce\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=About%2080%25%20of%20the%20world%27s%20sugar%20is%20produced,the%20U.S.%20are%20the%20world%27s%20largest%20sugar%20producers.\"><u>80%<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of the world\u2019s sugar, all from sugarcane. Africa alone has an output of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecofinagency.com\/news-agriculture\/1606-47286-africas-sugar-output-to-rise-by-800-000-tons-in-2024\/2025-season\"><u>10.4 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, per a 2024-25 output. In the 2023-24 season, the continental output at 9.6 million tonnes was meager compared to the total global production estimate of 187.9 million tonnes. Many countries in Africa that cannot grow cane or beets rely on either neighbors for supplies or import from mainly Brazil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which is Africa\u2019s largest sugar-producing nation<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the FAOSTAT, Egypt is the continent\u2019s biggest sugar producer at 2.46 million tonnes, as of 2022. Its sugarcane output rounded up to&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>15.3 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2023, from a Nile-embanked acreage of 139,547 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which country consumes most sugar in Africa<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gambia had the highest sugar per capita in Africa in 2022 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/sugar-consumption-by-country\"><u>0.0493 kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;per person per year. In annual consumption volumes, however, Egypt at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/sugar-consumption-by-country\"><u>2.398 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;topped the tally in 2022.
