{"id":22593,"date":"2025-06-06T13:34:24","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22593"},"modified":"2025-06-06T13:39:48","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:39:48","slug":"coffee-value-addition-in-peru-gaining-among-huanucos-smallholders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/06\/06\/coffee-value-addition-in-peru-gaining-among-huanucos-smallholders\/","title":{"rendered":"Coffee value addition in Peru gaining among Hu\u00e1nuco\u2019s smallholders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Alto Hualluga coffee belt on the banks of Hualluga river in the Hu\u00e1nuco region of central Peru is lately embracing caffeine value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this is thanks to an intervention program by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agraria.pe\/noticias\/devida-impulsa-tecnicas-especializadas-para-mejorar-el-cafe--39688\"><u>National Commission for Development and Life Without Drugs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(Devida), reports Agraria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will give specialty coffee and processing know-how to 200 smallholders in the area, beginning June 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the milestones of the project include imparting knowledge on brewing fermented lactic and alcoholic caffeine products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domestic value addition will deter locals from drug addiction by offering an alternative economic activity besides market sales of green coffee beans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of amassing processing expertise, small-scale farmers will also trial varieties that have made&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/peru\/coffee\/\"><u>Peru\u2019s coffee<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a specialty type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devida is forwarding high yield but hardy cultivars such as Tupi Catigu\u00e1, Para\u00edso and Obat\u00e1 for trials in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the varietal cultivation gains ground, it will hone healthy market competition between producers, upping quality and boosting income.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before Davide\u2019s project, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/khipucoffee.co.uk\/blogs\/news\/emerging-coffee-regions-harvest-guide-24-25\"><u>Alto Huallaga Specialty Coffee Competition<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;had been promoting quality contests among district farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Competition\u2019s promoter Jos\u00e9 Manuel says such initiatives will help local processing compare to that of the more famous Andes\u2019 origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sustainability\"><strong>Sustainability<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome of local value promotional efforts is enhanced sustainability, which has made Andean coffee famous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the decade ending 2023, around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/xliiicoffee.com\/en\/journal\/peru-coffee-original-uniqueness-comes-from-roots-and-sustainable-efforts\/\"><u>10,000 farmers<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;had made headway in organic coffee production, raising Peru\u2019s international profile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2025, 95% of organic coffee production was courtesy of small-scale farmers, mostly in the high Andes region.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The optimal altitude at between 1000 and 1800 meters above sea level creates conducive conditions for growing the commercial plant, free of chemicals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite emerging leaf rust disease threat, analysts expect national<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/06\/perus-organic-coffee-production-up-by-7-despite-challenges\/\"><u>\u00a0organic coffee production<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to grow annually by 7% in 2024-25.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthering this growth is the rise of hitherto outlying coffee areas such as Hu\u00e1nuco, which are pushing sustainability and quality value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Hu\u00e1nuco is only now emerging as a major growing belt, efforts such as those by Davide to add value are raising economic interest. To learn more on the overall coffee value addition in Peru as a whole, skim the statistics below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-statistics-on-coffee-value-addition-in-peru\"><strong>Statistics on Coffee Value Addition in Peru<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 11<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;biggest coffee producer, 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;biggest exporter and number 1 organic beans shipper, Peru is increasingly promoting value addition primarily via specialty green coffee. The country\u2019s green coffee generated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidaridadnetwork.org\/news\/circular-coffee-initiative-transforms-value-chain-in-peru\/\"><u>699 million Euro<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($764.3 million) in export returns in 2023. &nbsp;The main value addition focus starts right at the planting level, whereby Peru leads with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Coffee%20Annual_Lima_Peru_PE2024-0008.pdf\"><u>90,000 certified organic hectares<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;as of 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does Peru export or import value added coffee<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Peru exported 4,033 60-kg bags of raw beans, which means value added products are still minimal. However, in the same timeline, the nation imported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/camcafeperu.com.pe\/EN\/peruvian-coffee-statistics.php\"><u>6,117 tonnes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of instant coffee. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How is Peru honing coffee value addition<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru is creating coffee value via promotions like the 2023 Gender Action and Learning System where 2,674 farming households participated in coffee-related training. This workshop, for instance, helped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidaridadnetwork.org\/news\/circular-coffee-initiative-transforms-value-chain-in-peru\/\"><u>up to 10%\u00a0<\/u><\/a>of the participants strengthen women\u2019s role in cultivating and processing coffee. Another instance is by the anti-drug body, Davide, whose June 2025 work in Alto Huallaga is promoting value addition among\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agraria.pe\/noticias\/devida-impulsa-tecnicas-especializadas-para-mejorar-el-cafe--39688\"><u>200 coffee growers<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>total worth<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;of Peru\u2019s coffee value chain<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Peru\u2019s coffee value chain (including value added products and exports) represented&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-031-06862-1_13\"><u>9%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of all agricultural shipments. The coffee chain was also the fourth that year in agri-food export value, at $637 million.
