U.S.\u2019 grocers finally lowered the\u00a0retail rates<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of eggs to $5.12 a dozen before the national egg day on June 3, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA<\/u><\/a>), a good poultry market outlook has contributed to the belated decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report details that current average rates are $1 less than they were at their peak in March 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some places like southwestern Wisconsin, retail eggs are selling at below $3 to the dozen, almost wholesale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survey by TMJ4<\/u><\/a> news showed that a Walmart and an Aldi in Wisconsin were offering a dozen at $2.96 versus a Pick n\u2019Save\u2019s $3.99.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is notable that it has taken two months for supermarkets to slash their offers to these mouthwatering margins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all started in late March 2025, when shell eggs first slowed down in pricing<\/u><\/a> after avian flu cases had decreased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By late April, prices had depreciated to $3.74 per dozen from a February record high of $8.20 wholesale. However, end consumers could not immediately enjoy a drop as grocers tried to break even with their old stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ebbing demand due to cost further contributed to the slow catch up of retail rates with the wholesale equivalents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a May 30, 2025 report by the USDA, wholesale rates are lately at $2.52<\/u><\/a> vis-\u00e1-vis retail\u2019s $5.12 per dozen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States Retail Eggs Pricing Statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Consumer prices of eggs in the United States have come a long way these past two decades, ending 2025. For one, chicken\u2019s eggs cost just $1.21 per large dozen in May 2006, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS<\/u><\/a>). Their first price shock came in December 2022 when they hit $4.22 a dozen. They then ameliorated through much of 2023 and 2024 before they begun climbing in November 2024, starting with $3.65 a dozen.
