Mangosteen enthusiasts in Viet Nam are pre-ordering the June harvest as demand for local varieties eclipses that for ample Thailand\u2019s supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of late May 2025, there was a 50% price difference between affordable Thai largesse and limited Viet alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Ho Chi Minh City, premium local young mangosteens cost\u00a0120,000 dong<\/u><\/a>\u00a0($4.61) a kilo while imports rated below 100,000 dong ($3.84).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime grocery operators in such spots as Binh Thanh District within the city are already booking the June harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expectant harvest will emanate from such provinces as Binh Duong in the southeast where a production downturn in 2024 elevated prices<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 2025, market patriotism owes to the fact that the season has delayed, for it usually starts by late May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, middlemen scooped up the young mangosteen harvest that precedes the main one, from February through mid-April.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same situation could happen this year, now that the bug of green mangosteen has caught pantry owners. According to sources, the unripe fruit was already sold out in Hanoi\u2019s markets by May 20, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is despite prices skyrocketing to between 75,000 dong ($2.88) a kg for unpeeled ones and 500,000 dong<\/u><\/a> ($19.20) for peeled ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all owes to a new salad that requires 5 to 6 kg of green mangosteen to make 1 kg pulp.  The pulp in turn garnishes a popular salad that has become the talk of Hanoi in recent times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its premium 700,000 dong ($26.89) per set with 2 kg chicken, the urban mangosteen service niche is booming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the young Viet mangosteen season over, locals will eventually have to await the upcoming main harvest. The following statistics section further examines the production data of the local market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viet Nam Mangosteen Statistics <\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vietnam is one of the biggest mangosteen-producing nations in southeast Asia and the world. In 2023, mango, guava and mangosteen production totaled over 1.49 million tonnes,<\/u><\/a> the 11th<\/sup> highest worldwide and 7th<\/sup> in Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much mangosteens does Vietnam h<\/strong>arvest<\/strong> annually<\/strong>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mangosteen production alone sums up to 16,000 tonnes<\/u><\/a> per year in Vietnam. Although this is only 1.07% of the total combined output of mangoes, guavas and mangosteen, it is quite high by worldwide standards. Indeed, only Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia produce more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is weather an issue for Viet\u2019s mangosteen sector<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dry weather in production hubs often impacts the mangosteen industry, driving prices and forcing imports from Thailand. In 2023 and 2024 for example, the southeastern province of Binh Duong expected a plunge in production by 70%<\/u><\/a> due to dryness.  At the same time, wholesale prices drove up to 80,000 dong<\/u><\/a> ($3.07) a kg to meet limited supplies, in June 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
