China, the second biggest import market, had taken its import tariffs to 135% against the U.S.\u2019 145% before the current moratorium. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 30% of the Pacific Northwest\u2019s cherry crop ends up in international markets while 70% is homebound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-states-vs-tariffs\"><strong>Key States Vs. Tariffs<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the 10% universal import tax on hold, cherry-producing states are heaving a sigh of relief.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such is Michigan with its&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=By%20DANIEL%20SCHOENHERR%20%2C%20Capital%20News%20Service%20Michigan\u2019s,also%20increase%20input%20costs%2C%20impacting%20thousands%20of%20farms.\"><u>$36.5 million<\/u><\/a>-strong cherry industry, as of 2022. Providing 75% of the American tart cherry harvest, Michigan was expecting significant duty impact &nbsp;amid rising production costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another state is Washington, whose Yakima Valley and other hubs provide&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/news\/state\/washington\/article306842376.html\"><u>2\/3rds<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the total federal sweet cherry crop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After steering through the pandemic years and a heat emergency in 2023, Washington is finally ramping up production with no tariff cloud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Northwest Cherries organization, the regional crop inclusive of Washington\u2019s could reach 231,800 tonnes, above 2024\u2019s 200,563 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-california-competition\"><strong>Low California Competition<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, competition from California has transitioned better this year than in 2024, after the harvest began early enough in April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northwest Cherries puts the wrapping up sweet cherry harvest in the Golden State at 54,000 tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s harvest is also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbian.com\/news\/2025\/may\/26\/northwest-cherry-growers-likely-to-weather-tariffs\/\"><u>relatively small<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;this season and so it won\u2019t overlap the marketing season in the Northwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northwest cherries are therefore spot on a strong marketing season that has luckily fallen inside the tariff moratorium. To learn more on the industry, read on the statistics section below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pacific Northwest Cherries Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States produces both&nbsp;<em>Prunus avium<\/em>&nbsp;or sweet cherries and&nbsp;<em>P. cerasus&nbsp;<\/em>or sour cherries. The Pacific Northwest exclusively produces the&nbsp;<em>P.avium<\/em>&nbsp;variety and accounts for around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/fruits\/cherries\"><u>90%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the federal harvest. Michigan, on the other hand, is the single biggest&nbsp;<em>P. cerasus<\/em>&nbsp;source, accounting for 74% of the federal total. &nbsp;Washington tops the Northwest production of sweet cherries at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/fruits\/cherries\"><u>443,640 tonnes<\/u><\/a>, as of 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the cherry acreage in the Pacific Northwest<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Northwest Horticultural Council, the northwest U.S. had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nwhort.org\/industry-facts\/cherry-fact-sheet\/\"><u>50,000 acres<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;under cherries against nationwide 87,000 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has production and exports performed in recent years in the Northwest<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 23 and 35.2% of the total sweet cherry production in the Northwest is usually for export. According to the Northwest Horticultural Council, in the 2015-2024 period, 2017 had the highest production at<a href=\"https:\/\/nwhort.org\/industry-facts\/cherry-fact-sheet\/\"><u>&nbsp;26,432,194<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;20-pound cartons. Out of this total, 35.2% hit the export market, the highest for the 10-year period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are there key export markets for Northwest cherries<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada was the biggest export market for Northwest\u2019s cherries in 2024, at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nwhort.org\/industry-facts\/cherry-fact-sheet\/\"><u>2,202,860<\/u><\/a>\u00a020-pound cartons.
