{"id":22490,"date":"2025-05-19T13:47:29","date_gmt":"2025-05-19T13:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22490"},"modified":"2025-05-19T13:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T13:54:15","slug":"walleye-fishing-in-minnesota-a-big-hit-during-maiden-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/05\/19\/walleye-fishing-in-minnesota-a-big-hit-during-maiden-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Walleye fishing in Minnesota a big hit during maiden run"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Minnesota 2025 walleye season has recorded rising fishing licensure since its May 10 opener, in a run lasting till November 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wjon.com\/walleye-opener-brings-big-catches-and-some-surprises\/\"><u>WJON<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on May 16, 2025, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) put annual license sales as up by 6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the licensees have rushed to the bounteous northern lakes\u2019 region where they have recorded early gains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been a big hit particularly in the Canada-bordering Lake of the Woods, where anglers have landed walleyes and panfish aplenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the walleye capital, the lake\u2019s shallower parts have enabled fishers haul 16-27 inch fish from 16 feet-deep waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DNR\u2019s daily limit per harvester is two walleye, each at least\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoornews.com\/2025\/03\/13\/dnr-sets-walleye-regulations-for-2025-open-water-season-on-minnesotas-lake-mille-lacs\/\"><u>17 inches long<\/u><\/a>\u00a0but only one above 21 inches.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvesters however compensate the daily limits via premium\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/nile-perch\/\"><u>retail pricing<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of this perch family fish, worth $20 to $25 a pound.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technology is also helping some anglers, who are using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to spot-float boats in walleye-rich areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others are benefiting from the use of jigs, which are artificial baits that anglers plug in and out of the waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During each season, natural baits such as leeches and minnows, alongside artificial ones, reach their sales heights. For this season, the biggest sales happened in the weekend of May 10-11, 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weather-supportive\"><strong>Weather Supportive<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although central Minnesota was in the week ending May 18 seeing a drop in temperatures, weather has been generally stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the Lake of Woods, temperatures for the maiden season were a lukewarm&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2025\/05\/18\/lake-of-the-woods-rainy-river-walleyes-minnesota-fishing-opener\/\"><u>60\u00baF<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(15.56\u00baC) and the southeasterly winds below 10 mph.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current fishing operations will only have to deal with a minor drop in temperatures, which could make fishing slow. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fishing-rights\"><strong>Fishing Rights<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the manageable weather are ample harvesting rights on the Mille Lacs Lake, which is an Ojibwe Tribes\u2019 trustee fishery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state licensees on this lake will land 113,600 pounds in 2025 versus the 88,000 pounds for Ojibwe fishermen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This limiting of the total landings depends on the status of the walleye stock each year. For 2025, a healthy stock owing to the proliferation of juvenile yellow perch and plankton from 2024 is supportive. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ojibwe trust also allows catch-and-release fishing for state harvesters whose hauls should not exceed 15% of their harvest limit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, a good harvest start currently defines the seasonal walleye fishing in Minnesota, and which could improve through summer. For more on the status of this species in the North-Central state, review the statistics below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-minnesota-walleye-fishing-statistics\"><strong>Minnesota Walleye Fishing Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wallaye (<em>Stizostedion vitreum\/<\/em>Sander vitreus<em>)<\/em>&nbsp;is an important freshwater perch family food fish and sporting fish inhabiting 50 of Minnesota\u2019s many lakes. The state has been averaging&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/areas\/fisheries\/baudette\/low_walleye.html\"><u>407,967 pounds&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of the fish between 1995 and 1999, per the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The target has been a 430,000-pound yearly output. Most of the fish are cultured by breeders who buy juveniles from Canada and put them into lakes and ponds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do juvenile walleyes generate revenue in Minnesota and 12 other states<\/strong>?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported 46 businesses that cultured walleye in 13 states. Minnesota led the count with 8 businesses. All 13 states sold fingerlings worth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/aquaculture\/aquaculture-fin-fish-species\/walleye\"><u>$2.832 million<\/u><\/a>\u00a0while stockers generated $1.119 million. As one of 13 states that culture  fingerlings, Minnesota sells its stockers (near mature juvenile walleye) at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/aquaculture\/aquaculture-fin-fish-species\/walleye\"><u>$2.50\u00a0<\/u><\/a>apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are retail walleye expensive in MN and other states<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmrc.org\/commodities-products\/aquaculture\/aquaculture-fin-fish-species\/walleye\"><u>2023 data<\/u><\/a>, most walleye sell wholesale in skin-on fillets at between $6 and 12 per pound. However, premium skinless fillets hit retail rates of $20 per pound and above.
