{"id":22447,"date":"2025-05-13T09:37:47","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22447"},"modified":"2025-05-13T09:40:25","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:40:25","slug":"sugar-levy-in-newfoundland-and-labrador-nears-its-twilight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/05\/13\/sugar-levy-in-newfoundland-and-labrador-nears-its-twilight\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugar levy in Newfoundland and Labrador nears its twilight\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An announcement by the new premier of Newfoundland and Labrador on May 12, 2025 could end a contentious sugar levy. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM John Hagen said he\u2019d push to nix the Sugar Sweetened Beverage Tax, to alleviate the cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The provincial tax has been operational beginning September 2022, generating at least C$11 million ($7.87 million) annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nl.ca\/fin\/sugar-sweetened-beverage-tax\/\"><u>governmental website<\/u><\/a>, the basic charge is C$0.20 ($0.14) a liter for diluted sugary drinks. These include pops, sweetened&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/70-foods-that-start-with-i\/\"><u>iced tea<\/u><\/a>, lemonades and colored fruit juices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surcharges for concentrated drinks vary, with flavored powders eliciting as much as C$2 ($1.43) per kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Levies on frozen fruit concentrates at C$0.80 ($0.57)\/liter and on syrup at C$1.20 ($0.86) all aim to reduce purchases and promote health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So sensitive are provincial health concerns that Hagen traded off the sugar tax removal with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vocm.com\/2025\/05\/12\/sugar-tax-will-be-scrapped-says-premier-hogan\/\"><u>shingles vaccinations<\/u><\/a>\u2019 promise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vaccine prevents a painful rash in adults 50 and older and minimizes chances of contracting heart disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, it will take the legislature to repeal the tax, an easy task as the opposition backs the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One vocal critic of the tax is the head of the Progressive Conservative party,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/house-of-assembly-sugar-tax-1.7532906\"><u>Tony Wakeman<\/u><\/a>, who is agitating its repeal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says that the levy has not worked but has instead taken millions of dollars from locals amid hiking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/canada\/sugar\/\"><u>prices<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, in revenue collection terms, the sugar levy in Newfoundland and Labrador has exceeded its original intent of C$9 million ($6.44 million) a year. And as the following statistics show, northeast Canada loves its sugar, hence the ease of minting revenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-newfoundland-and-labrador-sugar-levy-statistics\"><strong>Newfoundland and Labrador Sugar Levy Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since September 2022, the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) sugar tax has generated revenue above a&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=The%20tax%20added%2020%20cents%20per%20litre%20to,generate%20roughly%20%249%20million\"><u>C$9-million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($6.44 million) yearly target. As the first levy for sweetened drinks in Canada, it seeks to cut excessive refined sugar consumption at the provincial level. NL utilizes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.restobiz.ca\/canadas-first-sugar-sweetened-beverage-tax-introduced-in-newfoundland-and-labrador\/\"><u>2.8%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of its food\/drink budget on sugary beverages per year, above Canada\u2019s average&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.nl.ca\/releases\/2021\/fin\/1019n06\/\"><u>1.4%<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How was sweetened beverage usage in NL before the tax<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BMC Public Health shows that before the tax,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-025-22432-w\"><u>57.3%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of adults in NL consumed sugary drinks each week. This was even as 23.2% drank healthy drinks, like milk, in the same timeline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How prevalent are lifestyle diseases in NL<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data by BMC Public Health reveals that Newfoundland and Labrador had 35.7% overweight population while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-025-22432-w\"><u>42.2%<\/u><\/a>\u00a0was obese, as of 2022.
