The township however currently faces the cold aftermath and an aphid-transmitted ringspot virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enter-weather\"><strong>Enter Weather<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming harvest happens after the coldest spring in the country since 2011, with temperatures averaging 20.4\u00baC in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watermelon is sensitive to cold and frost, both of which stunt growth and promote fungal infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, in May, Hualien\u2019s temperatures rise to an average 25.4\u00baC average, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather25.com\/asia\/taiwan\/hualien?page=long-range\"><u>Weather<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May in Taiwan brings at least 22 days of rainfall, which together with the rising heat accelerate the watermelon harvest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, a spike in temperatures fans pest activity, which highlights the ongoing fight against aphids in Fenglin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-harvest\"><strong>The\u00a0Harvest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From around May 15, the Hualein watermelon harvest will be underway, reprising an annual calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial output forecasts are at 20,000 tonnes, slightly below the average first bout that the county usually realizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan as a whole reaps at least&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>139,049 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of watermelon annually, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the production downturn in 2025, local fruits are distinctive for their large sizes, sometimes reaching over 25 kg apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hualien County\u2019s magistrate Hsu Chen-Wei, the local climate nourishes sweet and quality\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/80-foods-that-start-with-w\/\"><u>watermelon<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that attract consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of sweetness are rising&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/taiwan\/watermelon\/\"><u>watermelon prices<\/u><\/a>, per the county\u2019s agriculture department\u2019s director, Chen Shu-wen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early May 2025 offers were at 17 Taiwanese dollars ($0.56) per 600 g&nbsp;<em>wholesale<\/em>&nbsp;and up to 25 dollars ($0.82)&nbsp;<em>retail<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To combat such rises, the department of agriculture is advising farmers to access and plant ringspot virus-free seedlings. The measure will insure the next season\u2019s surplus and contain market rates. And as the statistics below indicate, eastern Taiwan prides in handsome  watermelon production, a leading horticultural produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taiwan Watermelon Production Statistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated on the southeast coastline of China, Taiwan ranks 46<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in watermelon production worldwide at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/watermelon-production-by-country\"><u>156,100 tonnes<\/u><\/a>, as of 2022. It rounds up a Far-East quadruple featuring China, Japan and South Korea in the top echelons of global production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has watermelon production in Taiwan performed annually<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>FAOSTAT<\/u><\/a>, Taiwan produced between over 136,000 and 220,000 tonnes of watermelon in the 2018-2023 timeline. While 2018\u2019s acreage topped at\u00a0<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>10,591 hectares<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(ha), by 2013 it had bottomed out at 7,303 ha. In-between, 2019 had 8,213 ha,\u00a02020 some\u00a07,644 ha and\u00a02022\u00a0some 7,317 ha.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is neighboring China a major consumer of watermelons<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geographically situated off Taiwan, China is not only the world\u2019s biggest producer of watermelon but the foremost consumer, too.
