This is after the Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) temporarily opened the shores it closed in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;the CDFW on April 24, 2025, the fisheries resume from the California\/Oregon border to the northern jetty of Humboldt Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fisheries will therefore extend from the northern state lines to the Santa Barbara county border in the southwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision stems from findings that fish are now safe from the domoic acid traces that had led to the coastline\u2019s closure in 2015. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDFW conducted tests with rock crab samples from crabbers in the central and northern state parts \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/Archive\/commercial-rock-crab-fishery-opens-from-californiaoregon-border-to-humboldt-bay\"><u>over the course of several years<\/u><\/a>.\u201d Along the way, the tests had led to a brief reopening of fisheries in the Humboldt County\u2019s coast in May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this commercial opening is limited, it will nevertheless revive a sector that used to earn the northern shores $1,000, annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the northern fisheries only brought 365 pounds in annual landing values before 2015, fish units sold well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For its limited availability, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/crab\/\"><u>rock crab costs<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at least $18.5 a pound in retail seafood markets in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rules-for-crabbers\"><strong>Rules for Crabbers<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While earnings are a priority, fishermen will still have to follow similar rules as those of the foregoing snow crab fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to CFDW, crabbers must avoid whale entanglement, a cause that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/12\/12\/the-dungeness-crab-season-knocks-in-oregon-skips-california-washington\/\"><u>delayed the California snow crab season<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in January 2025. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the current red rock crab fishing, the department\u2019s statement advised fishermen to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafoodsource.com\/news\/environment-sustainability\/northern-california-rock-crab-fishery-opens-for-first-time-in-a-decade\">avoid setting gear when whales are present<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The northern rock crab fisheries in California are therefore back and other fish from here are safe to consume. Statewide, the most lucrative fishery is the southern one, namely in Santa Barbara and San Diego. The San Diego coast alone handles&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marinespecies.wildlife.ca.gov\/red,-yellow,-and-brown-rock-crab\/the-fishery\/\"><u>18,000 rock crab landings&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>annually, according to the California Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (CFDW).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which ports land the most rock&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>crab<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;in California<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1980 and 2024, Sant Barbara in southwest California has been representing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marinespecies.wildlife.ca.gov\/red,-yellow,-and-brown-rock-crab\/the-fishery\/\"><u>over 50%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of annual landings, per a CFDW\u2019s graph. The Los Angeles and San Diego coasts follow at less than 20% of landings apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much does California produce in rock crabs annually<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA), California lands up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/foss\/f?p=215:200:2978530861399:::::\"><u>1,010 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of rock crab per year.
