{"id":22357,"date":"2025-04-29T09:48:46","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22357"},"modified":"2025-04-29T09:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:50:15","slug":"spring-lobster-season-in-p-e-i-starts-amid-fisheries-dredging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/04\/29\/spring-lobster-season-in-p-e-i-starts-amid-fisheries-dredging\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring lobster season in P.E.I starts amid fisheries&#8217; dredging\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Prince Edward Island or P.E.I. in Atlantic Canada began its lobster spring season on April 25, amid selective\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/canada\/dredging-underway-in-some-p-e-i-harbours-as-lobster-season-gets-underway\/article_4efc6c19-3be6-5305-b922-be2401c5e038.html\"><u>harbor dredging<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although 2025 prospects are high, the possible effect of tariffs on landing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/canada\/lobster\/\"><u>prices&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>beclouds the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-early-opening\"><strong>Early Opening<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fisheries this year also open earlier than in 2024 when windy conditions had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/05\/17\/p-e-i-lobster-season-underway-with-low-prices\/\"><u>delayed the season<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to May 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2025, northern and southeastern shores including Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 24 and LFA 26A1 respectively opened at the earliest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southern <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/spring-lobster-season-setting-day-will-be-friday-in-2-lfas-off-pei\/ar-AA1Dua26?ocid=BingNewsSerp\">LFA 23 and 26 B<\/a><\/u>\u00a0will begin the season on April 30 while the northern LFA 26B on May 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from LFA 26B which ends the season on July 2, all other areas will harvest lobster until June 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dredging-works\"><strong>Dredging Works<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In LFA 23 and 24, dredging is taking place at the harbours of Malpeque, North Lake and North Rustico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) on April 23, deepening shorelines helps increase safety and depth for lobstering boats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This engineering undertaking will temporarily delay the already open waters in P.E.I.\u2019s northern shore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DFO explained that the dredged debris can range from 1,000 to 20,000 cubic meters underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This waste ends up either far into the sea, by the beachside or in special containers on solid land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prince Edward Island gives such works prominence for the region is highly dependent on fisheries. August through October marks the fall season while April 30 to June 30 represents the spring\/summer season. The spring harvest is the most lucrative of the two. In a good year, the province produces up to&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Approximately%20fifty%20percent%20of%20PEI%20lobsters%20are%20harvested,almost%20fifteen%20per%20cent%20of%20Canadian%20lobster%20production.\"><u>15%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of Canada\u2019s lobster volumes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much lobster does P.E.I produce yearly<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, lobster was P.E.I\u2019s leading seafood category by volume at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princeedwardisland.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/stats_for_2022_fishery.pdf\"><u>44,373,786 pounds<\/u><\/a>.
