{"id":22301,"date":"2025-04-22T13:33:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T13:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22301"},"modified":"2025-04-22T13:39:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T13:39:24","slug":"tomato-prices-in-the-u-s-could-hike-when-mexico-pact-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/04\/22\/tomato-prices-in-the-u-s-could-hike-when-mexico-pact-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomato prices in the U.S. could hike when Mexico pact ends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 2019 U.S.-Mexico agreement to suspend investigations on tomato dumping is ending July 14, 2025, rendering\u00a0market prices\u00a0uncertain.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Commerce has decided not to renew the pact and instead slap imports a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/tomato-price-warning-issued-over-trump-tariffs-2061719\"><u>&nbsp;20.9% duty<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Mexico provides 70% of tomatoes in the U.S.\u2019 market cheaply, the termination could raise prices this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expiring\u00a0Tomato Suspension Agreement [TSA]\u00a0goes back to 1996, with five renewals since then until 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the successive investigation suspensions, cross-border deliveries soared by 400% beginning 1996, forcing uncompetitive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/tomatoes\/\"><u>domestic pricing.&nbsp;<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last go on the suspension was a December 2024 review by the Federal Register. The governmental journal showed that terminating the agreement would still result to dumping levels of up to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2024\/12\/04\/2024-28396\/fresh-tomatoes-from-mexico-final-results-of-the-expedited-sunset-review-of-suspended-investigation\"><u>30.48%<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, President Trump\u2019s upcoming tariff seems to have found a monetary solution to the journal\u2019s findings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some associations from especially Florida and within Mexico itself are however against both the tariff and the scrapping of the TSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consumers-on-the-line\"><strong>Consumers on the Line<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the deadline nears, industry analysts have shifted focus on how consumers in the United States could bear elevated costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lance Jungmeyer, head of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas told The Packer that costs could force \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepacker.com\/news\/industry\/industry-groups-warn-tomato-trade-shift-could-raise-prices-strain-supply-chain\"><u>retailers&#8230;[to]&#8230;raise prices<\/u><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any great hike of 30% or 40% represents a margin that customers cannot bear-Jungmeyer suggests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hike in tomato prices in the U.S. has been bubbling since mid-2024 due to increasing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/06\/tomato-production-in-mexico-up-2-amid-dumping-fears-in-the-u-s-market\/\"><u>production in Mexico<\/u><\/a>, which has in turn promoted dumping.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless the Mexican side brokers an alternative agreement before July 14 antidumping measures will return. The statistics below explore the story further by spotlighting the U.S.\u2019 tomato import industry, with emphasis on Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-states-tomato-prices-imports-statistics\"><strong>United States Tomato Prices &amp; Imports Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States and Mexico are each other\u2019s leading trading partners. While Mexico provides 70% of all tomatoes in the American market, the U.S. supplies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepacker.com\/news\/industry\/industry-groups-warn-tomato-trade-shift-could-raise-prices-strain-supply-chain\"><u>70%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of Mexico\u2019s total agri-food needs. Regarding tomato trade, the heart of the matter is low prices across the border due to dumping. In 2024, for instance, tomatoes from Mexico sold in the U.S. at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/consumer-tomato-prices-might-rise-in-july-as-battle-with-mexico-heats-up\/ar-\"><u>20.91%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;below local market rates. This is however better than in 1996 when they had sold 188% lower than their local equivalents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does TSA&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>impose price caps on<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>tomato&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>imports<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;from Mexico<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2019\/09\/24\/2019-20813\/fresh-tomatoes-from-mexico-suspension-of-antidumping-duty-investigation\"><u>Tomato Suspension Agreement<\/u><\/a>\u00a0specifies certain rates for the sale of tomatoes from Mexico in American markets to reduce price uncompetitiveness. Despite this, cheap sales of imports in wholesale markets do persist. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much tomat<\/strong><strong>oes&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>does the U.S. import from Mexico<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomatoes rank as the number 2 biggest agricultural import by the United States from Mexico after beer and spirits. The U.S. claims a<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Tomatoes%20and%20Products%20Annual_Guadalajara_Mexico_MX2024-0028.pdf\"><u>\u00a099.8%<\/u><\/a>\u00a0share of all tomato exports by Mexico, with the rest going to Japan and Canada. In 2023, fresh\/chilled tomato imports into the United States from Mexico reached 2.006 million tonnes, worth over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/trade\/comtrade\/en\/country\/MEX\/year\/2023\/tradeflow\/Exports\/partner\/ALL\/product\/070200\"><u>$3.04 billion<\/u><\/a>. The U.S. also imported<a href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/bilateral-product\/processed-tomatoes\/reporter\/mex\"><u>\u00a0$1.26 million<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in processed tomatoes from Mexico in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do tomato imports benefit the American economy<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General tomato imports from countries like Mexico create 30,000 jobs in the United States, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepacker.com\/news\/industry\/industry-groups-warn-tomato-trade-shift-could-raise-prices-strain-supply-chain\"><u>The Packer<\/u><\/a>.
