{"id":22264,"date":"2025-04-17T09:48:50","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T09:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=22264"},"modified":"2025-04-17T09:52:47","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T09:52:47","slug":"an-apple-a-day-for-363-years-comes-of-age-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/04\/17\/an-apple-a-day-for-363-years-comes-of-age-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"An apple a day for 363 years comes of age in South Africa\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa on April 17 is marking 363 years since the first apple tree produced fruit on local soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 150 years after Vasco Da Gama circumnavigated the Cape of Good Hope, Jan van Riebeeck planted the first apple seedlings here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first harvest of two Witte Wijnappel apples on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncesc.com\/geographic-faq\/who-brought-apples-to-africa\/\"><u>April 17, 1662<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;would then shape the future of local apple production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this crucial date rose the famed Elgin Valley of Western Cape, which defined continental production in the 1900s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple production in South Africa has since then catapulted from that original 1.5-meter tree into a leading world exporter status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exports-distribution\"><strong>Exports Distribution<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2025 season, the country expects to ship&nbsp;51 million 12.4 kg boxes&nbsp;of<em>&nbsp;Granny Smiths,&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/10\/09\/south-african-pink-lady-apples-rule-the-marketplace\/\"><u>Pink Lady<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and other varieties. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SA\u2019s apples enjoy fair distribution margins to four key regions that include East and South Asia, which leads with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersweekly.co.za\/agri-news\/south-africa\/apples-celebrate-363-years-in-south-africa\/\"><u>30% share<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(2024).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa controls 20% of the exports while the United Kingdom with 15% is the biggest single country destination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Asia, especially the second biggest single country destination, the UAE, controls 12% of all shipments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-latest-trade-breakthroughs\"><strong>Latest Trade Breakthroughs<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To enrich the above rich history, the sector courts trade deals, the latest of which being a Thai market re-entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After stopping imports in 2008, Thailand welcomed back shipments in February 2025 by reviewing its import requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen highlighted the Thai breakthrough by reiterating shipping importance since 50% of production is outbound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henceforth, the&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=South%20Africa%20is%20set%20to%20resume%20the%20exportation,Tuesday%2C%20following%20its%20closure%20for%20almost%2016%20years.\"><u>Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>will register all groves and pack-houses with Thai supply contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, 363 years later, the South Africa apple industry is standing robust while still rebooting past markets. Below are a few extra statistics that give the full picture of the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-south-africa-apple-production-and-export-statistics\"><strong>South Africa Apple Production and Export Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa ranks first in Africa in apple production ahead of Egypt, with production at over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/apple-production-by-country\"><u>1.32 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, as of 2022. This places the country 12<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;worldwide in terms of annual output behind the top trio of China, T\u00fcrkiye and the United States. Exports grew by&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=South%20Africa%20is%20set%20to%20resume%20the%20exportation,Tuesday%2C%20following%20its%20closure%20for%20almost%2016%20years.\"><u>40%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the 2014-2024 period, according to SA News. Driving the exponential expansion are the UK at 1.51 billion Rand ($80.1 million) and the UAE at 726 million rand ($38.5 million) in 2024.
