{"id":21901,"date":"2025-02-19T09:41:33","date_gmt":"2025-02-19T09:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=21901"},"modified":"2025-02-19T09:52:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-19T09:52:04","slug":"new-zealand-again-turns-milk-bullish-at-10-kgms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/02\/19\/new-zealand-again-turns-milk-bullish-at-10-kgms\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand again turns milk-bullish at $10\/kgMS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the second year, milkmen in New Zealand could again bag a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralnewsgroup.co.nz\/dairy-news\/dairy-general-news\/repeat-10-milk-price-forecast\"><u>NZ$10<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($5.72) per kilogram of milk solids (kgMS) farm gate average.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the last quarter of the 2024-25 season closes in May, milk could still lock at the forecast NZ$10+ ($5) per kgMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Westpac\u2019s forecasts have even got bold enough to bet that the product might hit NZ$10.30 ($5.90) a kgMS soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The estimates, which have proven correct so far, glean data from the domestic Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up to mid-February 2025, the auction had brought&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/new-zealand\/milk-cream\/\"><u>milk prices in New Zealand<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;up by 3.7%, week-on-week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-auction-prices-drop\"><strong>Auction Prices Drop<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, on the auction night of February 17-18, the prices at GDT slipped by a cumulative&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/the-country\/news\/gdt-dairy-prices-dip-06-in-latest-auction\/4OA753EKTVF5VCGHODWQ22PQ4M\/\"><u>0.6%<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most affected product, which often determines &nbsp;the farm gate rates of the leading dairy hubs like Fontera was milk powder. It slid by 0.2% to US$4,153 a tonne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the slide, milk powder is still a strong performer buoyed by a 5% and 4.1% consecutive weekly rises since early February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skim milk powder in its part lost 2.5% to US$2,754 a tonne, after having risen 4.7% in the foregoing auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-costs\"><strong>Low Costs<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the latest drop on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>, low costs are keeping NZ\u2019s milkmen locked onto the top dollar price of NZ$10 ($5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, a study by Racobank shows that the Oceania region wallows at the bottom of milk production costs worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NZ and Australia share an enviable&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efeedlink.com\/contents\/02-19-2025\/a8db966a-e391-414d-970c-a9518ac306e7-0001.html\"><u>US\u00a237<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(NZ\u00a20.65) a liter in production costs while the global average is US\u00a20.47 (NZ\u00a282) a liter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currency weakness against the dollar has apparently also helped New Zealand earn a 9% production cost discount in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is happening despite worldwide feed costs pushing overall dairy expenses up by 19% between 2019 and 2024. For now, New Zealand where rain has resurfaced after a dry El Ni\u00f1o summer is not feeling the feed pinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It thus looks like the reigning positive performance is propelling New Zealand\u2019s farm gate milk towards a dream\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/markets\/commodities\/westpac-picks-1030kg-milk-price-for-current-season\/Q7CQGQAOWFAMRBPEIVM4FDNVAA\/\"><u>NZ$10.30<\/u><\/a>\u00a0($5.90) a kgMS. In a cost analysis set up, this means that most farmers can get a profit of at least NZ$2 ($1.14) per kgMS. The prices ranged between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interest.co.nz\/rural-data\/dairy-industry-payout-history\"><u>NZ$9.50 and10.15 per kgMS<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($5.44-5.81) in five of the leading dairy houses. These include Fontera, Tatua, Westland, Synlait and Oceania Dairy.
