{"id":21873,"date":"2025-02-12T13:37:34","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=21873"},"modified":"2025-02-12T13:38:59","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:38:59","slug":"fda-recall-of-60-baked-goods-stokes-listeria-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/02\/12\/fda-recall-of-60-baked-goods-stokes-listeria-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA recall of 60 baked goods stokes listeria awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A voluntary FDA recall of 60 baked goods in the U.S. has brought listeria contamination into focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first listed the over 2 million product units on its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/ires\/?Event=96118\"><u>recall page<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on January 7, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This followed a voluntary withdrawal alert by manufacturer and wholesaler FGF LLC, based in Brownsburg, Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By February 5, when the FDA site classified the information, the reporting food company had listed 2,017,614 baked items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The listing was under classification II, which means that the food has potential to harm but the resulting sickness is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/fda-recalls-more-than-2-million-baked-goods-over-concerns-of-listeria-contamination\/ar-AA1yFLBX?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"><u>treatable.&nbsp;<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the foods under review bear a production date of before December 13, 2024 and are mostly cakes or ring donuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, some of the goods under removal sell at the popular Dunkin\u2019 stores, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/health\/fda-donuts-recall-listeria.html\"><u>New York Times<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-listeria\"><strong>What is Listeria?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In filing the withdrawal, FGF mentioned the baked goods as bearing potential traces of the contaminant&nbsp;<em>listeria monocytogenes.&nbsp;<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since August 2023 when a New York-based company had alerted of potentially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/fma-international-recalls-sas-fromagerie-ottavi-tome-corse-sheep-milk-cheese-imported-france-because\"><u>contaminated sheep milk cheese<\/u><\/a>, listeria has increasingly attracted public attention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FDA describes listeria as a bacteria that flourishes in unhygienic conditions and can infect people through food contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It thrives in soil, sewage, rotting garbage, live animals, and sometimes human food under production in poor sanitary conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who consume such dainties can fall sick of a disease known as listeriosis whose spreading agents include pets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a mild disease that causes vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever but can also bring miscarriages in susceptible pregnant women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, FDA often creates public sensitization through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/04\/18\/fdas-front-of-package-labeling-change-whats-the-impact-on-the-food-industry\/\"><u>front-of-package food labeling<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to reduce dietary sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, this latest FDA recall effectively comes at an economically sensitive time when regional food products are under a trade duty slap. Indeed, baked goods from Canada where FGF distributes its products may attract an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/02\/06\/tariff-ensemble-comes-for-canada-mexico-china\/\"><u>import tariff<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by March 4.
