{"id":21845,"date":"2025-02-06T13:38:12","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T13:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=21845"},"modified":"2025-02-06T13:39:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T13:39:58","slug":"tariff-ensemble-comes-for-canada-mexico-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2025\/02\/06\/tariff-ensemble-comes-for-canada-mexico-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Tariff ensemble comes for Canada, Mexico, China"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A tariff war is back after the United States slapped Mexico, Canada and China with import tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Trump called China\u2019s bluff by imposing an immediate&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=President%20Trump%20signed%20executive%20orders%20Saturday%2C%20imposing%2025%25,10%25%20tax.%20The%20tariffs%20take%20effect%20on%20Tuesday.\"><u>10% tariff&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>on all imports, starting February 4, 2025. &nbsp;This is short of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/10\/07\/trump-and-harris-come-up-with-diverse-ag-plans\/\"><u>aggressive duty of 60%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;he had promised during the 2024 election campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China, which could retaliate, currently exports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/index.php\/country-papers\/2971-2021-statistical-analysis-of-u-s-trade-with-china\/file\"><u>$355.3 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;more goods to the United States than it imports from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada and Mexico bagged a 25% import duty apiece on many goods, many of which agri-food. Unlike China, the two U.S.\u2019 neighbors however have a grace period for the duty only takes effect on March 4.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which Agricultural Goods?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a move that Trump claims will ease an expanding trade deficit, key agricultural goods are on the line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these is avocados, whose deficit with key partner, Mexico, looms large. &nbsp;The U.S. imports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Avocado%20Annual_Mexico%20City_Mexico_MX2024-0018.pdf\"><u>81%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of its avocados from its neighbor but hardly ships any of its own there. &nbsp;In 2021, for instance, the U.S. exported just&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=In%202021%20the%20United%20States%20imported%20%243%20billion,can%20now%20be%20distributed%20to%20all%2050%20states.\"><u>$31 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;worldwide and bought $3 billion in avocados, mostly from Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other goods in the tariff line include tomatoes from Mexico as well as meat and spirits from Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significantly, spirits and whiskey imports from Canada have so far been enjoying zero tariffs in the past three decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, Canada says it could retaliate with 25% duty on American wine, peanut butter and orange juice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China in its part exports cotton, dairy, poultry, tree nuts and soybeans and receives pork, soy and corn from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-import-duty-hurt-local-companies\"><strong>Does Import Duty Hurt Local Companies?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the import tariff targets the origin country, local importers feel the real pinch because they pay the tax directly to U.S. Treasury.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, a company in the United States shipping from China will henceforth be paying 10% in tax to federal customs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To recoup the cost, the same importer will definitely pass on the costs to the American consumer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some well-performing entities could hold on for a while before passing costs. One of these is Chipotle, a U.S.-based avocado and tomato shipper from Mexico. The company said just after the 25% tariff hit on Mexico that it will absorb the costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chipotle can afford this stand since it recorded a rare transaction growth in 2024 of 5%, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/live\/live-trump-in-tariff-tit-for-tat-with-china-duties-on-canada-mexico-paused-for-one-month-191201535.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmluZy5jb20v&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAF4RLRmugPQyH153FfV05AAdYIN1mNRjrjBijW\"><u>Yahoo Finance<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, the company admits that if the March 4 tariffs turn permanent, it will have no choice but to raise&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20price%20of%20avocados%20per%20kilogram%2Fpound,see%20today%27s%20exact%20prices%20of%20avocados%20in%20US\"><u>avocado prices<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It therefore looks like the latest tariffs have reawakened the pre-2020 trade war, this time round in an impatient era. Below are extra bits on the top agricultural imports from the U.S. from each of the three countries vis-\u00e1-vis tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-states-tariff-statistics-for-top-agriculture-imports\"><strong>United States Tariff Statistics for Top Agriculture Imports&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are the top agricultural imports by the United States from Mexico, Canada and China, with their respective tariffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mexico import:<\/em>&nbsp;avocado. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Mexico exported over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Avocado%20Annual_Mexico%20City_Mexico_MX2024-0018.pdf\"><u>$3.5 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of avocados in 2021. This value however decreased to $3 billion in 2023. 81% of these exports normally land in the United States, at<a href=\"#:~:text=In%202021%20the%20United%20States%20imported%20%243%20billion,can%20now%20be%20distributed%20to%20all%2050%20states.\"><u>&nbsp;$3 billion<\/u><\/a>, as of 2021. Currently, the U.S. imposes a duty of&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=When%20importing%20avocados%20into%20the%20United%20States%2C%20a,country%20of%20origin%20due%20to%20specific%20trade%20agreements.\"><u>\u00a211.2 per kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of imported avocados including on Mexico\u2019s shipments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Canada import:<\/em>&nbsp;baked goods. In 2023, the U.S. suffered a trade deficit with Canada of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldstopexports.com\/us-most-valuable-imports-exports-with-canada\/\"><u>-$78.4 billion<\/u><\/a>, hence the current imposition of new tariffs. Other than sawn wood, baked goods (pastries, biscuits and bread) was the top agricultural import by the United States from Canada in 2023. &nbsp;These goods were worth $5.034 billion. Though bread is not in the list of the slated March 4, 2025 duty, the related&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2025\/02\/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-25-per-cent-tariffs-effective-february-4-2025.html\"><u>pasta<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;will attract 25% duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>China import<\/em>: textile: as of 2021, the U.S was facing a massive trade deficit with China of &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/index.php\/country-papers\/2971-2021-statistical-analysis-of-u-s-trade-with-china\/file\"><u>$355.3 billion<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;The key agricultural import from China is textile, which amounts to $50.3 billion (2021) and is equal to 32.6% of all American textile imports.
