Tens of kgs of the delicious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/sapindaceae\/litchi-chinensis\/\"><em><u><em>Litchi chinensis<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>stone fruits have of late been leaving\u00a0Melbourne port daily, bound for native China.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rush follows heightened orders of red cherries and lychees as gifts during the \u201cYear of the Snake\u201d that starts January 29, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-premium-aussie-lychees\"><strong>Premium Aussie Lychees<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, the red fruit is getting pricey in Australia to almost Christmas levels. Some businessmen are selling a kg at A$20 ($12.51), nearly 40% year-on-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According Larry Griffin, a Townsville businessman, talking to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-18\/lunar-new-year-drives-up-australian-fruit-prices\/104826394\"><u>ABC<\/u><\/a>, the premium price mostly owes to a rain-saturated poor harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some parts of North Queensland apparently received 400 mm of rainfall smack on the harvest timing in December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on trade flow from his suppliers, Griffin expects farmers to have 30 to 40% less yields this season. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seasonality-and-international-market-squeeze\"><strong>Seasonality and International Market Squeeze<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than high foreign demand, the high&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/australia\/lychee\/\"><u>lychee pricing in Australia<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;also owes to a limited season which ends by March.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outbound Lunar New Year demand will increase the pressure on demand, given that Hong Kong is a huge importer. In 2021, Hong Kong emerged the third top export destination for Aussie lychees at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/australianlychee.com.au\/images\/lychee\/Export\/2022_ALGA_Export_Market_Insights.pdf\"><u>85,000 kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;worth A$1,190,850 ($744,876).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s 2021 import price was mid-range at A$14.01 ($8.76) a kg while Indonesia\u2019s tipped the scale at A$19.08 ($11.93).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In comparison, domestic grocers\u2019 prices of lychees in Australia were between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/9now.nine.com.au\/today\/fruit-and-vegetable-prices-expected-to-soar-ahead-of-lunar-new-year\/9cd6e6f2-f605-4c4c-9eba-031744201e8d\"><u>A$18 and 35<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($11.26-21.89) a kg, January 22, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a word, demand and top prices are swaying the fortunes of Australia\u2019s lychees this Chinese New Year, despite a stock rundown. As of 2021, Australia was exporting around 20 to 25% of its lychee output.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which are the top&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>lychee&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>export destinations for Australia<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/australianlychee.com.au\/images\/lychee\/Export\/2022_ALGA_Export_Market_Insights.pdf\"><u>Australian Lychee Growers Association (ALGA),<\/u><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0New Zealand received 119 tonnes of lychees in 2021, the highest that year. The United States followed with 110 tonnes, with Hong Kong next at 85 tonnes while Singapore rounded up the top 5 markets with 80 tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which destinations are most lucrative for Aussie lychees<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using export price gauge, the most lucrative export market is Indonesia and Singapore, each commanding over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/australianlychee.com.au\/images\/lychee\/Export\/2022_ALGA_Export_Market_Insights.pdf\"><u>A$19<\/u><\/a>\u00a0($11.89) per kg (2021).
