Although the sector is in its infancy, it has shown remarkable resilience against weather drawbacks. Besides, researchers peg its growth rate at 89% by 2026. And according to Tru-Cape Marketing<\/u><\/a>, exports to China could begin that same 2026\/27 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tru-Cape Marketing tells Selina Wamucii that calibrating the Chinese market includes targeting the narrow export window just before the rival Chile\u2019s season starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“South African cherries currently do not have access to the Chinese market, but all signs point to the possibility of exporting cherries to this important market by the 2026\/27 season. China is currently the largest cherry importer globally,\u201d says the marketing team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Tru-Cape adds that the South African cherry industry is tiny in global terms, producing only about 1% of the world’s cherries. \u201cFor context, we have around 700 ha under cherry orchards, while Chile boasts around 72 000 ha!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic  Shipping Timing for the South African Cherry<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Nico Verhoef, financial director at Witzenberg Properties, emphasizes that to compete internationally, including China, South Africa needs to produce during a time when other Southern Hemisphere countries are not. \u201cCurrently, we are marketing our early cherry varieties in a favourable window of about two to three weeks after Canada’s harvest ends and before Chile’s production starts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


“It is a limited period, so we must focus on the quality of our cherries, which is another competitive advantage we have. The market highly values South African fruits, particularly stone fruit and cherries due to their exceptional quality, thanks to our climate. Although we are a relatively new player in cherry production, we are making a notable impact globally with our high-quality cherries.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Verhoeff also points out that the shelf life of South African cherries is crucial for producers who wish to export via sea freight. At present, most cherries ship by air freight to ensure they arrive in good condition and take advantage of the market opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


“While significant improvements are happening at the port of Cape Town, it is not yet at a level that gives producers confidence that their products will reach markets as planned, maintaining both shelf life and market opportunities. We need to address this issue, as air freight is costly and diminishes our cost advantage when Chilean cherry volumes enter the market.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optimism about South African cherry season not dampened by frost damage<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite frost heavily affecting early cherry varieties, Tru-Cape\u2019s cherry growers remain positive about the overall quality of this season\u2019s harvest and the promising opportunities available in both local and international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile there may be less fruit on the trees this season, the quality and size of the fruit are outstanding,\u201d says Deon Malherbe from the farm Eselfontein in the Warm Bokkeveld, noting that the season is running about fourteen to sixteen days later than last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Nico Verhoef, the financial director at Witzenberg Properties, early varieties, of which about 40% to 60% were destroyed by frost during the flowering stage, represent only approximately 10% of the overall crop. Fortunately, the later varieties were spared from the frost, and producers are cautiously optimistic about the later part of the harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProducers in the early market segment faced a significant setback, but the reduced volume helped to drive prices upwards. We were also concerned that the cool spring conditions and late-season rain might affect the sugar levels of the cherries. However, to our delight, we are now harvesting firm cherries with high sugar levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Johan Brink, Tru-Cape\u2019s national marketing manager, says the market is currently empty, and cherry prices are approximately 25% higher than last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe local market prices are aligned with those in the export market, and we are experiencing strong demand from local retailers and municipal markets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nico mentions that all South African retailers are now keenly interested in cherries, a shift from a few years back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe local public is more aware of cherries, and there is growing demand for them even in the informal market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Export markets are calling<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At present, around 70% of Tru-Cape\u2019s cherry harvest sells within South Africa, but Johan sees promising opportunities in the United Kingdom, Europe, the Far East, and the Middle East. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has always been our strategy to focus on the local market as much as possible to reduce our risk. However, with new orchards and increasing cherry production, we are shifting our approach to grow exports.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deon is also thrilled about talks of South African cherries gaining market access to China by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a tremendous opportunity for our industry.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Witzenberg Properties aims to achieve its goal of selling 50% of its cherries in the export market this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a genuine risk that supply may eventually surpass the local demand; hence, it is crucial to diversify and explore new markets promptly,\u201d explains Nico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa produces less than 1% of the global cherry supply, yet there is a definite preference for South African cherries in international markets, according to Johan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe market is willing to pay a premium for South African cherries because of the incredible flavour and exceptional quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better varieties for our conditions<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Deon is particularly enthusiastic about advancements in cultivar development in the cherry space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe new generation of varieties outshine the older cultivars, and you might want to reconsider your approach if you\u2019re not using the best varieties available. Factors like fruit size, shelf life, taste, and yield will guide you when selecting varieties,\u201d he explains, adding that cherries are a prime example of a farming crop that carries both high risks and high rewards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drive in the market is for bigger fruit, even as large as 28 mm and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen selecting cultivars, think about the future and keep these market trends in mind,\u201d is his advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the leading exporter of pome fruit in South Africa, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing commits to focusing on apples and pears, but cherries are a good addition to their marketing basket, reckons Roelf Pienaar, the managing director of Tru-Cape. The South African Cherry Association reports a remarkable 54% growth in cherry orchards from 2020 to 2023. Notably, around 73% of the country\u2019s cherry production occurs in the Ceres area, where many of Tru-Cape\u2019s shareholders are actively farming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of them are venturing into the cherry industry, which presents an excellent diversification strategy for those growing apples and pears. I see great potential in cherries, and we aim to increase our volumes in the upcoming seasons, particularly to take advantage of opportunities in trading markets like the Far East and the Middle East,\u201d says Roelf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
