At the same time,\u00a0robotics are increasingly stepping in to aid an aging population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Togowa\u2019s slopes, farmers will be reaping their paddies throughout October, marking a six-month grain maturity journey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The region\u2019s terraces undulate through picturesque ancient walls that protectively enclose the acclaimed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/special\/08\/3610\/\"><u>Golden \u201cHino Hikari\u201d&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>rice variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hino Hikari is one of the most popular rice strains in Japan because it is thick, chewy and delicate. It also among the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/japan\/rice\/\"><u>cheapest<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at as little as&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=If%20you%20want%20to%20enjoy%20the%20true%20flavor,30%20kg%20%2866%20lbs%29%3A%2010%2C000%20\u2013%2011%2C000%20yen\"><u>1,200 yen<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($8) per 2 kg, hence its usage at restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Okayama, aging farmers are coping with the harvest two weeks before schedule, especially in Kamimoni hamlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hot conditions are impairing progress and farmers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-climate-change-rice-farming-struggle-a569237462e65426587d48876145e825\"><u>worried&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>if yields will reduce as they did in 2023,&nbsp;per an AP News report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The farmers\u2019 concerns echo official statistics that private rice reserves&nbsp;are at a two-decade low of&nbsp;1.56 million tonnes&nbsp;due to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Japan recorded burgeoning temperatures, with July ranking the hottest ever at 2.16\u00baC above the average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turn-to-robotics\"><strong>Turn to Robotics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to combating the combined problems of harvest pressure, heat and an aging population has come through robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2023, artificial reapers by Tmusk Co. undertook a Miyazaki harvest in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahi.com\/ajw\/articles\/15026367\"><u>5%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of the typical manual harvesting time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solar-powered robots such a model known as Raicho I also do weeding by wading through the paddies like ducks. This way they reduce the crop tending time to 29 hours versus the manual optimum of 529 hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to harvesting, the reapers normally attain a yield maximization rate of 95% or almost all rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while robotics are saving labor and time in a typical rice harvest in Japan, cultivation is upgrading courtesy of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/08\/29\/new-rice-varieties-to-combat-heat-shortage-in-japan\/\"><u>\u00a0heat-resistant strains<\/u><\/a>. These, including the now-popular\u00a0<em>Sai no Kizuna<\/em>\u00a0variety, could be the way out as Japan fights changing climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, heat may be impacting yields, but the Land of the Rising Sun is changing tack in the way it harvests its traditional staple grain. For a full picture on the harvest of Japan\u2019s rice crop, read on in the statistics section, next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-japan-rice-harvest-statistics\"><strong>Japan Rice Harvest Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rice harvesting in Japan is a combination of hand clipping through sickles and mechanization using combine harvesters. In as early as 1978, there were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jircas.go.jp\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/jarq\/14-1-020-023_0.pdf\"><u>650,000 combine harvester units&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in the country. Alongside them were 1,700,000 binders, which are basically small reaping machines. The Institute of Agricultural Machinery in Japan estimates that the use of harvesting machines in Japan covers over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jircas.go.jp\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/jarq\/14-1-020-023_0.pdf\"><u>90%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of nationwide paddies. About 50% of the harvest takes place through combine harvesters alone. Since 2023, robots are also increasingly becoming a part of the paddy harvesting culture of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How has harvest time reduced over the years<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to &nbsp;JICA data via Rice for Africa, Japan\u2019s rice harvesting hours have reduced drastically in 6 decades due to mechanization.
