This is in anticipation of the 2024 harvest that runs from September 1 to November 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a PR statement on August 19, the forestry service stated that licenses will be available from August 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The permit, whose 2024 cost is $20, guarantees licensees&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/careersandeducation\/monongahela-national-forest-ginseng-permits-on-sale-next-week\/ar-AA1p4Mqh?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"><u>95 wild roots<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in a single ranger station per season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who will be collecting roots on private land, acquiring&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Anyone%20who%20transports%20more%20than%20eight%20ounces%20of,must%20first%20obtain%20a%20ginseng%20license%20from%20VDACS.\"><u>permission<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from land proprietors will be mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-comparisons-with-2023-season\"><strong>Comparisons with 2023 Season<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2023 season, licenses for resident collectors cost $15.75 while those for out-of-state diggers amounted to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/themonroetimes.com\/sports-2\/outdoors\/davis-ginseng-season-begins-with-conservation\/\"><u>$30.75<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But while diggers could previously purchase two permits simultaneously, in 2024 one can only acquire one permit at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like in 2023, each permit in 2024 applies to one district and harvesters will need different permits per jurisdiction. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-permissible-roots\"><strong>Permissible Roots&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, diggers can only uproot over 5-year old ginseng, preferably plants with three leaves or prongs and which have fruited. For conservation reasons, the forestry department recommends the sowing of fruits of each uprooted plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the quantity allowance is 95 plants per season, West Virginia stipulates a maximum dig of 24 roots a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forestry authorities have also provided against harvesting before the actual September 1 start, to conserve supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the herbal root\u2019s importance to the local economy, there are also permits for sales outside the state\u2019s borders. &nbsp;For instance, dealers with over 8 ounces of the root must apply for a sale license that costs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdacs.virginia.gov\/pdf\/permitapplication.pdf\"><u>$10<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In marketing terms, dried wild ginseng retails at an average<a href=\"#:~:text=Over%209%2C000%20pounds%20of%20ginseng%20was%20harvested%20in,per%20pound%2C%20so%20that\u2019s%20a%20pretty%20enticing%20lure.\"><u>&nbsp;$700 per pound<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in WV, while cultivated roots average&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/ginseng-roots\/\"><u>$125<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the U.S. ginseng season is just about to begin along key haunts such as the forest range of West Virginia. Of a total 80,080 tonnes produced per year before 2013, the United States usually contributed 1.3% or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/236959246_The_world_ginseng_market_and_the_ginseng_Korea\"><u>1,054 tonnes.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;This is even as South Korea provided the lion\u2019s share at 55.9% or 44,749 tonnes, according to Research Gate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much does ginseng generate from exports<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States ranked fourth in 2022 in ginseng root exports worth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/hs\/ginseng-roots\"><u>$42 million.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Only South Korea at $84.1 million, China at $84 million and Canada at $71.4 million, sold more. For imports, the U.S. came fifth worldwide in 2022 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/hs\/ginseng-roots\"><u>$10.3 million<\/u><\/a>, about a quarter fraction of the export value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the wholesale value of American ginseng annually<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before ginseng reaches external dealers who export it, it first passes from producers to wholesalers.
