In 2023, China received 4% of the total exports and emerged the South American country\u2019s fifth biggest worldwide destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asia as a whole represents\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=Bananas%2C%20one%20of%20Ecuador\u2019s%20key%20agricultural%20exports%20to,the%20industry%20to%20double%20its%20exports%20to%20China.\"><u>6%\u00a0<\/u><\/a>of all banana exports by Ecuador and could grow further following\u00a0the preferential trade.\u00a0In retrospect, the Ecuadorian Banana Exporters Association (AEBE) had earlier projected\u00a0that free trade would increase the Asian share to 15%.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ecuador Banana Designate Origin Campaign<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current focus however is not just seeing Asia as a continental market but targeting &nbsp;the actual customers there. For instance, Ecuador is now keen on a growing Chinese middle class that loves<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/ecuador\/bananas\/\"><u>&nbsp;premium-priced<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;quality bananas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jos\u00e9 Antonio Hidalgo, AEBE\u2019s executive director, the objective is to make China a large-scale target market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designated origin promotions of the Ecuador banana&nbsp;are already underway&nbsp;and could reach major distribution chains such as Alibaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, Hidalgo hopes that coordination between the government and banana companies can entice consumers in China to prefer Ecuadorian produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, there is still hope given that yearly banana exports grew by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itfnet.org\/v1\/2024\/01\/china-ecuadorian-banana-industry-poised-to-double-china-exports-as-fta-nears-ratification\/\"><u>45%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2023. This improvement that coincided with the May 1, 2023 signing of the preferential trade agreement could recur as free trade matures. Furthermore as the following statistics show,&nbsp;China remains Asia\u2019s biggest driver of Ecuador\u2019s sales and the world\u2019s second largest banana-consuming market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sino-ecuador-banana-statistics\"><strong>Sino-Ecuador Banana Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Ecuador and China in 2023 signed a free trade agreement on key agricultural exports such as bananas, which came into effect in 2024. Ecuador, for one, is an Andes mountain range-bordering nation on the Pacific Coast of South America. It is a source of many tropical fruits and a leader in banana exports with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldstopexports.com\/bananas-exports-country\/\"><u>26.3%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>world export value share (2022). According to FAOSTAT, banana production in the country reached&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>6,078,788.71 tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in 2022, the highest in the world. This is even as banana acreage expanded in 2022 to 167,544 hectares. In comparison, Ecuador\u2019s trade partner, China, ranks as the second biggest banana-consuming nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Does Ecuador produce cooking bananas or just t<\/strong><strong>able<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;fruits<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cooking bananas and plantains make around 14% of the total banana production in Ecuador. In 2022, for instance, the country had 114,526 hectares under cooking bananas and plantains, which produced&nbsp;<a href=\"#data\/QCL\"><u>857,561.99 tonnes.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do China\u2019s imports of Ecuador\u2019s bananas compare with other Asian nations<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the January-November 2023 period, China imported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itfnet.org\/v1\/2024\/01\/china-ecuadorian-banana-industry-poised-to-double-china-exports-as-fta-nears-ratification\/\"><u>256,510 tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of bananas from Ecuador, the largest by a Far-east nation. Japan came second at 87,247 tonnes for the same period. While this is just a fraction of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itfnet.org\/v1\/2024\/01\/china-ecuadorian-banana-industry-poised-to-double-china-exports-as-fta-nears-ratification\/\"><u>5.9 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;Ecuador exported worldwide in 2023, it is quite significant by consumer base.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is China a big consumer of bananas<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China, the key export destination of Ecuador\u2019s bananas was the world\u2019s second biggest banana-consuming nation after India in 2021.
