The program will link food banks with producers and traders who already belong to Choose Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This repackaging of the purchasing program will give Choose Iowa a new philanthropic face. Traditionally, the membership initiative has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chooseiowa.com\/about\"><u>promoting state produce<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;between farmers, businesses and local consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also joining the state government at providing equal contributions are private community food banks such as the Food Bank of Siouxland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-food-basket-of-the-world\"><strong>\u201cFood Basket of the World\u201d<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, Iowa has chosen to feed itself despite being famous as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/nutrition\/new-choose-iowa-food-purchasing-program-to-boost-local-agriculture-and-reduce-hunger\/ar-BB1qZcvM?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"><u>the food basket of the world<\/u><\/a>.\u201d Aptly,&nbsp;Chris Ackman, the communications manager at Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) used this same label in a state feeding context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was spot on as around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/farmflavor.com\/iowa\/iowa-crops-livestock\/iowas-top-10-ag-products-infographic\/\"><u>90%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of Iowa\u2019s total area is under agriculture, covering over 30 million acres, as of 2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state leads in American corn, biofuel (<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>corn ethanol<\/u><\/a>) and pork production. It also commonly ranks second in soybean production nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iowa is also a major producer of wheat, rye, oats, flaxseed, hay, red clover, green vegetables, apples and potatoes. Leading animal products include pork, bovine red meat and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/01\/31\/u-s-egg-production-prices-beat-odds-to-notch-up-3\/\"><u>eggs<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this maximum commitment to agriculture, it therefore comes as no surprise that the state is now fighting food insecurity. To learn more about Iowa\u2019s other leading scores in food and agriculture, below are a few highlights,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-iowa-food-and-agriculture-statistics\"><strong>Iowa Food and Agriculture Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in a fertile area in the upper American Midwest, Iowa leads in several areas of national agricultural production. One of these is crop production, especially corn. In 2020, corn output reached&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Iowa%20continues%20to%20lead%20the%20nation%20in%20numerous,production%20base%20is%20expected%20to%20extend%20through%202021.\"><u>2.3 billion bushels<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;or 16% of the national total, the highest nationally. Soybean output in 2020 was just as impressive at 494 million bushels, second only to Illinois\u2019 nationally, per Iowa State University\u2019s data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How is food security in the U.S.<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USDA\u2019s Economic Research Service (ERS) reported that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-u-s\/key-statistics-graphics\/\"><u>87.2%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of U.S. households met food security needs in 2022. &nbsp;Food insecurity only affected 12.8% of the population, 5.1% of which had very low food security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is Iowa the biggest agricultural state in the U.S. by revenue<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to ERS, &nbsp;Iowa had the second highest state-by-state earnings from agriculture in 2022&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.ers.usda.gov\/reports.aspx?ID=17844\"><u>$44,781,637,000<\/u><\/a>,&nbsp;after California. This represented 8.3% of all national agricultural revenue for 2022, vis-\u00e1-vis California\u2019s 10.9%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What portion of federal red meat does Iowa produce per year<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than field crops, the state is a net producer of animal products.
