{"id":20898,"date":"2024-07-29T13:57:42","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T13:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20898"},"modified":"2024-07-29T14:02:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T14:02:31","slug":"colorado-river-brings-alfalfa-farmers-300-per-acre-foot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/07\/29\/colorado-river-brings-alfalfa-farmers-300-per-acre-foot\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado River brings alfalfa farmers $300 per acre-foot\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Alfalfa farmers in California&#8217;s Imperial Valley could soon stop watering their\u00a0<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>thirsty fodder crop<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for 2 months and instead accept compensation to shore up a depleted Colorado River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, growers are willing to receive $300 per acre-foot of irrigated area primarily because current oversupply of hay has killed&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=The%20current%20retail%20prices%20for%20alfalfa%20seeds%20in,from%20%242.18-%243.00%2Fpound%20or%20%244.8-%246.6%20per%20kg\"><u>prices<\/u><\/a>. &nbsp;According to calculations, this kitty could offer more income than if farmers did not forgo irrigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Imperial Irrigation District, whose residents use the bulk of the 2,334 km-long river, is providing the funding support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Tina Shields of the district\u2019s water management, the valley as a whole does not like to see its fields lie&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-alfalfa-colorado-river-irrigation-imperial-valley-23997aef7949ece5a3e89a73e6541359\"><u>\u201cfallow<\/u><\/a>.\u201d However, they have &nbsp;no choice but to follow commercial decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shoring-up-means-more-water\"><strong>Shoring Up Means More Water<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But because August marks the height of summer when the river dries up, farmers are ready to toe the line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, consecutive summer droughts have made the river lose<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/babbitt-blasts-biden-admin-for-sitting-on-the-bench-in-colorado-river-talks\/\"><u>&nbsp;20%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of its levels since the year 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the ways to recoup the water volume amid climate toll is to shore up the river, by improving its sources. One such measure took place in winter 2022-23, whose success prompted the U.S.Bureau of Reclamation to increase water allocations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August 2023, the bureau said that extra snow meltdown had increased water levels in Lake Mead which serves the Colorado River. This &nbsp;meant that the states that use the river for irrigation would get extra water than they did in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-restrictions-in-seven-states\"><strong>Restrictions in Seven States<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands now however, it seems like the hot summer of 2024 may prompt tightening of restrictions across seven states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona, for instance, had to lose 18% of its water usage in 2024 although it had lost more in 2023 at&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Federal%20officials%20are%20easing%20water%20restrictions%20on%20the,water%20levels%20at%20the%20nation\u2019s%20two%20largest%20reservoirs.\"><u>21%<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming also have had to reduce their access in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these restrictions, it appears like the conservation efforts in the southwest by President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/07\/24\/biden-ag-triumphs-worth-noting-after-he-quit-presidential-race\/\"><u>Biden\u2019s Investing in America<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;series have paid up. Still, some political voices think that Biden could have been more aggressive to improve supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the decision to pay farmers to shut off the Colorado River could mean dry alfalfa fields and a saved river. And as the statistics below show, the river under the spotlight has tens of millions of people who depend on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-colorado-river-agriculture-statistics\"><strong>Colorado River Agriculture Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Colorado River is a 1,450-mile (2,334 km)-long river that flows in a southwesterly direction in the western United States and northwest Mexico. Its source is the Rocky Mountains in Colorado at La Poudre Pass Lake. It supplies water to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-alfalfa-colorado-river-irrigation-imperial-valley-23997aef7949ece5a3e89a73e6541359\"><u>40 million people<\/u><\/a>, who include American Indian tribes. It waters some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-024-01291-0\"><u>2 million hectares<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(4,942108 acres) of farmland. This area mostly produces animal fodder and vegetables that feed many people in North America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How important is the Colorado River in agriculture<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Save The Colorado organization, 78% of the river\u2019s water or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/savethecolorado.org\/the-river\/agriculture\/\"><u>4 trillion gallons<\/u><\/a>, diverts to agriculture. The journal Nature in its part adds that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-024-01291-0\"><u>74%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the human-related uses of the river go into irrigation, while 52% to consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much water from the Colorado river diverts to alfalfa cultivation<\/strong>? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfalfa and other hay irrigation accounts for around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-024-01291-0\"><u>46%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the entire use of the river by human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much water does California use from the Colorado River<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each state has an allocation of the total amount of water it can use from the strategic waterway. California uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncesc.com\/geographic-faq\/how-much-water-is-california-entitled-to-from-the-colorado-river\/\"><u>4.4 million acre-feet<\/u><\/a>. Of this supply, 444,000 acre-feet or 10% of the total allocation goes to the Water District.
