{"id":20774,"date":"2024-07-11T13:56:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T13:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20774"},"modified":"2024-07-11T13:59:23","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T13:59:23","slug":"consumers-in-the-netherlands-favor-meat-over-legumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/07\/11\/consumers-in-the-netherlands-favor-meat-over-legumes\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumers in the Netherlands favor meat over legumes \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A survey shows that two-thirds of consumers in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/netherlands\/\"><u>Netherlands<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;overlook legumes as meat substitutes,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nieuweoogst.nl\/nieuws\/2024\/07\/11\/consument-ziet-peulvrucht-over-het-hoofd-als-geschikte-vleesvervanger\"><u>Nieuweoogst&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>reported on July 11, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2023 survey by vegetable and legume processor, HAK,&nbsp;paints a poor attitude by the Dutch towards plant-based protein foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicole Freid, HAK\u2019s MD, said during the survey reading that 67% of consumers still carry an \u201cold-fashioned image\u201d of pulses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She attributed the&nbsp;above mentality&nbsp;to the lagging consumption of brown beans, beans, kidney beans and lentils by the Dutch population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, locals consumed only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helgilibrary.com\/indicators\/bean-consumption-total\/\"><u>5 kilotonnes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of beans in 2019, while top bean-consuming nations averaged double-digit figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsumers have always been creatures of habit,\u201d Says Freid, adding that in her opinion partial blame lies with retailers who withhold legumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lacking tips on legumes\u00a0at stores, buyers consequently know little about the food group&#8217;s high fiber levels and low saturated fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-3-of-consumers-in-the-netherlands-can-t-prepare-beans\"><strong>1\/3 of Consumers in the Netherlands Can\u2019t Prepare Beans\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the survey details that a third of consumers in the nation lack practical knowledge on bean cooking. While this deters their consumption, it however does not hinder the fact that they are cheaper meat substitutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HAK has therefore come up with a tempting tool known as \u201cBoonus calculator\u201d to whet the local appetite for beans. It shows bean-preparation recipes alongside saving tips of plant-based protein sources. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The calculator shows comparisons of popular Dutch recipes that pit meat against legumes with respective euro-based calculations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on target is the reigning popular topic of emissions which has prompted a&nbsp;<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>carbon tax<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in neighboring Denmark. In the Holland context, the calculator will be helping foodies calculate their carbon emissions. According to HAK, legumes lead to lower emissions than meat. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) echoes this revelation to the effect that beef pound emits&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/ask-mit\/why-have-i-heard-eating-meat-bad-climate\"><u>60 times<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;more CO<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>than peas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the HAK survey could turn tables for the Western European nation\u2019s current protein plan. One is the National Protein Strategy, which focuses on the wide cultivation of legumes to improve diet and raise soil biodiversity. Of these years, 2015 recorded the highest consumption rate of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helgilibrary.com\/indicators\/bean-consumption-total\/\"><u>6 kt&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>while 2018 had the lowest at 3 kt. In comparison, neighboring Germany and France had 8 and 31 kt respectively in 2019, while the leader, India, had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helgilibrary.com\/indicators\/bean-consumption-total\/\"><u>5,275 kt<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How many grams of legumes do the Dutch consume per day<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), the\u00a0Netherlands consumed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9370574\/\"><u>less than 10 g<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of legumes daily in 2022.\u00a0This was the seventh lowest legume consumption level in Europe. In comparison, the world consumption of legumes averaged \u00a0between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9370574\/\"><u>1.2 and 122.7 grams<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per day in 2022. The highest consumption rate was in Afghanistan and the lowest in Norway. Notably, continental Europe consumed less than 50 g a day in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much meat do&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>people in the Netherlands<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;eat per year<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Netherlands has a moderate meat consumption rate in comparison with other Western countries. In 2022, for example, the country ranked 77<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0worldwide in meat per capita at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/meat-consumption-by-country\"><u>59.14 kg<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per person per year. Pork led consumption at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/meat-consumption-by-country\"><u>27.71 kg<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per person per year.
