The levy will include emissions from livestock, fertilizer usage and the degree of cultivation in high-carbon land such as meadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This breakthrough happens 3 months after the EU dropped demands to cut non-carbon dioxide emissions on member countries\u2019 farms by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/02\/07\/eu-simmers-down-on-farmers-endorses-major-2040-climate-target\/\"><u>30%<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-month-anxious-journey-to-climate-tax\"><strong>5-month Anxious Journey to Climate Tax<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark introduced the carbon levy independent of the EU after 5 months of negotiations by a panel known as the \u201cGreen Tripartite.\u201d The panel featured the government, non-governmental bodies, climate advocates and agricultural leagues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the talks\u2019 breakthrough, Denmark\u2019s Foreign Minister, L\u00f8kke Rasmussen called the agreement the most far-reaching he\u2019s ever joined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He mentioned natural biodiversity and viable agriculture as some of the long-term outcomes of the carbon taxation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-lying-land-subsidy\"><strong>Low-lying Land Subsidy<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Towards this natural biodiversity is a subsidy of 40 billion krone that will &nbsp;fund the reforestation of low-lying land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Denmark, arable lowlands apparently release the most carbon dioxide because of excess tilling and power-intensive drainage needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government understands that farmers on swampy areas will opt in the \u201creforestation\u201d subsidy rather than pay carbon tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denmark will also use the subsidy to expand forestland by 250,000 hectares (ha) come the year 2045. Out of this acreage, 100,000 ha will be non-commercial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-extra-goals\"><strong>Extra Goals<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of reclaiming carbon-intensive farmlands, the government also seeks to reduce nitrogen emissions by purchasing select private farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another goal is to remove farming on 140,000 hectares of lowlands by 2030, even before the tax session begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the interim between 2024 and 2030, Denmark seeks to have cut all greenhouse emissions by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/denmark-sets-first-carbon-tax-on-agriculture\/\"><u>70%<\/u><\/a>. Pertinent to this are forecasts to the effect that agriculture will by 2030 account for 46% of domestic greenhouse emissions. The government also seeks to reduce emissions by 1.8 million tonnes come 2030 from the two biggest agricultural emitters, namely dairy and pork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, through climate tax, Denmark has restructured local&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/denmark-sets-first-carbon-tax-on-agriculture\/\"><u>\u201cland and food production<\/u><\/a>,\u201din the words of the Economy Minister. And as the following statistics point out, this is a historic restructuring by regional and global standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-denmark-agricultural-emissions-statistics\"><strong>Denmark Agricultural Emissions Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In global terms, agricultural activity causes&nbsp;<a href=\"#editorsPicks\"><u>12%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of global greenhouse emissions that include carbon, methane and nitrogen. &nbsp;The world\u2019s greenhouse emissions from agriculture alone have increased by 20% in the three decades starting 1990. Though Denmark is not a top 20 agricultural emitter, it contributes to the EU\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/insights\/interactive-chart-shows-changes-worlds-top-10-emitters\"><u>384.4 million tonnes&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of agricultural emissions (2021). India topped the list of agricultural emitters in 2020 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1351209\/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-agriculture-by-country\/\"><u>741.92 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, followed by China, Brazil and the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How important is agriculture to Denmark\u2019s economy<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture contributes<a href=\"https:\/\/agricultureandfood.dk\/media\/m1qfuuju\/lf-facts-and-figures-2023.pdf\"><u>&nbsp;22%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of all Danish exports from all economic sectors. Most of the farm exports go to Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and China. The key agricultural goods are dairy, pork and fish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which agricultural commodity contributes most emissions in Denmark<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, Denmark\u2019s farms emitted 10.6 &nbsp;million tonnes of greenhouse gases. &nbsp;The top emitter is the dairy\/meat sector at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/02\/21\/tax-on-farming-emissions-vital-to-denmarks-climate-targets-says-government-adviser\"><u>&nbsp;28%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of agricultural emissions. Danish pork comes next, releasing&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Using%20the%20attributional%20approach%20as%20prescribed%20in%20the,Lisbeth%20Mogensen%20of%20the%20University%20of%20Aarhus%2C%20Denmark.\"><u>3.1 kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;carbon dioxide in the journey from the slaughterhouse to the market. To mitigate these outcomes, Denmark collects food waste from homes.
