{"id":20595,"date":"2024-06-18T13:52:43","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T13:52:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20595"},"modified":"2024-06-18T13:56:39","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T13:56:39","slug":"southern-rice-crop-stable-despite-indias-monsoon-falling-short","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/18\/southern-rice-crop-stable-despite-indias-monsoon-falling-short\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern rice crop stable despite India\u2019s monsoon falling short"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A fortnight after the beginning of India\u2019s monsoon, the metrological department reports&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/india-news\/imd-says-monsoon-at-20-deficit-heatwaves-causing-alarm-for-agriculture-124061700609_1.html\"><u>20% rain shortfall&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>from June 1 but this won\u2019t affect paddy areas in the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weatherman warns that the shortfall is temporary and there is still time for the predicted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/05\/28\/boost-for-agricultural-production-in-india-with-above-normal-monsoon\/\"><u>above-normal monsoon rain<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one exception however, the south, where rain increased by 17% this season due to an early start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southern India is a major rice-producing zone, particularly in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/byjus.com\/social-science\/largest-rice-producing-state-in-india\/\"><u>Andhra Pradesh<\/u><\/a>, Kerala and Tamil Nadu states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paddy fields here rely on both the monsoon rains and the deltas of three rivers including Godavaru, Krishna and Cauvery.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irrigation is minimal in the region as rainfall feeds both the paddy fields as well as rivers and dams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-monsoon-culls-other-rice-regions\"><strong>Monsoon Culls other Rice Regions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because 70% of all farming water in half of India comes from rainfall, below-normal precipitation can stunt thirsty paddy crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, India\u2019s biggest rice-producing state of West Bengal harbors such fears after at least 20% rain shortfall since June 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central India region on the other hand is lucky because rice is not a major crop here. Though, the region\u2019s monsoon rains have decreased by 29% and the low saturation could affect pulses, soy and cotton crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparably, the northeast region where India\u2019s monsoon has so far decreased by 20% relies heavily on rain for rice cultivation. The northeastern state of Assam in particular plants its paddy with water from Brahmaputra river, which also depends on rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rice-prices-up\"><strong>Rice Prices Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the monsoon rains\u2019 shortfall,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/india\/rice\/\"><u>rice prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;have increased slightly even in the rainy southern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average price at the start of the monsoon was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commodityinsightsx.com\/commodities\/mandi-prices\/rice-market-price\"><u>3,257 rupees<\/u><\/a>\u00a0($39.09) a quintal in Siliguri in West Bengal. The maximum at the time on June 2, 2024 was 4,500 rupees ($53.96) a quintal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week later on June 10, Kerala wholesale markets were averaging 4,300 rupees ($51.56) and maximum 5,000 rupees ($59.90) a quintal. \u00a0The cheapest variety was the IR-8 cultivar at 3,600 rupees ($43.16) against mataa parboiled type\u2019s 4,600 rupees ($51.15) per quintal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, as the monsoon takes a temporary break, only the southern rice region has experienced sufficient rain. As the statistics below reveal, there is nonetheless more to India\u2019s rice scene than just the monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-india-rice-statistics\"><strong>India Rice Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rice is India\u2019s staple crop and it enjoys high production due to conducive governmental policies and scientific research that support farmers. India was the second biggest rice-producing nation in the 2021-22 period at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/specificdocs\/documents\/2022\/sep\/doc2022920106001.pdf\"><u>130.29 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, according to government data. This was a 13.1 million-tonne increase from the output of the 2020-21 period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How big is\u00a0India\u2019s rice\u00a0export\u00a0value?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India is the world\u2019s top rice exporter with exports worth $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldstopexports.com\/rice-exports-country\/\"><u>10.8 billion<\/u><\/a>\u00a0or 36.8% of global exports, in 2022. Only Thailand comes close at $4 billion or 13.5% of global exports, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much rice does each person eat per day in India<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2022 estimate puts a daily consumption of\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=An%20estimated%20190%20grams%20of%20rice%20was%20available,rice%20per%20person%20amounted%20to%20about%2090%20grams.\"><u>190 g<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of rice per person in India, equivalent to 90 g of uncooked rice. On a yearly basis, India ranks lowly at\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=Last%20Updated%3A%20Nov%2016%2C%202023%20Based%20on%20a,with%201.63%20kg%20and%20Bulgaria%20with%201.99%20kg.\"><u>102 per kg<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per capita, in 2019. The top 15 nations led by Gambia consumed between 150 and 370 kg per person per year in 2019.
