This at a time when the U.S. market wants to check cross-border \u201cprice dumping\u201d of Mexico\u2019s tomatoes through tariffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USDA\u2019s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) reported on June 4, 2024 that it expects Mexico&#8217;s production to increase by 2% over 2023\u2019s 3.22 million tonnes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FAS cited climate change as a key challenge to tomato yields but countered that greenhouse cultivation is a mitigating factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leader in tomato production in Mexico still remains Sinaloa on the Pacific coast, whose 2023 national production share was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fas.usda.gov\/data\/mexico-tomatoes-and-products-annual-0\"><u>22%<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other leading production areas are the central region\u2019s San Luis Potosi, avocado-rich&nbsp;<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>Michoac\u00e1n<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and Zacatecas in north-central Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dumping-across-the-border\"><strong>Dumping Across the Border<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time when tomato production in Mexico is improving, the United States\u2019 Congress is contemplating import tariff increment to reduce \u201cdumping.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to studies, Mexico\u2019s tomatoes compete unfairly with their American counterparts in the U.S. market. 2024 estimates show that their prices are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/markets\/consumer-tomato-prices-might-rise-in-july-as-battle-with-mexico-heats-up\/ar-\"><u>20.91%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;below the American average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This estimate is way lower than that of a 1996 review that revealed cross-border prices as 188% less than those in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, Congress could bring in tariffs to insure price parity and this would mean a 21% tomato price raise in the U.S..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/tomatoes\/\"><u>tomatoes in the U.S<\/u><\/a>., already average $2 a pound, customers could pay $2.24 a pound upon\u00a0the tariff.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico remains the number 1 exporter of tomatoes into the U.S. market and in 2022 alone, it supplied 1.81 million tonnes, equal to 90% of all U.S.\u2019 tomato imports. This is despite the fact that annual tomato production in Mexico is lower than that of the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, improving tomato production in Mexico may encounter export tariff increment plans by the U.S. congress. For that matter, below are production, export and consumption statistics that drive Mexico\u2019s tomato industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mexico-tomato-statistics\"><strong>Mexico Tomato Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico is a net producer and exporter of tomatoes. The country produced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomatonews.com\/en\/worldwide-total-fresh-tomato-production-in-2021_2_1911.html\"><u>4.149 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of tomatoes in 2021. This output earned Mexico the 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;rank worldwide after Spain, Egypt, Italy, the U.S., Turkey, India and production leader China. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which is the world\u2019s top tomato<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>exporting nation?&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico ranked the world\u2019s biggest exporter of raw tomatoes in 2021 worth\u00a0<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>$2.7 billion<\/u><\/a> or 25.7% of the global exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What portion of Mexico\u2019s tomatoes is processed?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While only a small portion of the country\u2019s \u00a0tomato value chain, processed tomatoes in Mexico reached\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomatonews.com\/en\/worldwide-total-fresh-tomato-production-in-2021_2_1911.html\">40,000 tonnes<\/a>\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the consumption rate of tomatoes in Mexico?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico had a yearly per capita consumption of tomatoes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Tomatoes%20and%20Products%20Annual_Monterrey%20ATO_Mexico_MX2023-0028.pdf\"><u>13.4 kg\u00a0<\/u><\/a>per person in 2022.
