{"id":20515,"date":"2024-06-06T09:48:13","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T09:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20515"},"modified":"2025-06-06T13:21:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:21:32","slug":"perus-organic-coffee-production-up-by-7-despite-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/06\/perus-organic-coffee-production-up-by-7-despite-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru\u2019s organic coffee production up by 7% despite challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Peru\u2019s organic coffee output is to grow by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2024\/06\/04\/peru-coffee-report-production-up-though-organic-challenges-persist\/\"><u>7%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the 2024-25 season despite leaf rust disease problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to USDA\u2019s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS),&nbsp;production will peak at&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Peru%27s%20coffee%20production%20and%20exports%20look%20to%20continue,while%20exports%20are%20forecast%20at%204.07%20million%20bags.\"><u>4.22 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;60-kg bags, above 2023-24\u2019s 4.2 million bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exports will also increase by 6%, to reach 4.07 60-kg million bags, up from 2023-24\u2019s 4.06 million bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main drivers of production are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/05\/21\/worlds-coffee-prices-rally-on-insufficient-supplies\/\"><u>reigning high prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and increasing organic fertilizer use, both of which are boosting yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positive-international-prices\"><strong>Positive International Prices<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the price impact, organic coffee from Peru is attracting high international prices due to its exceptional quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 4, 2024, international coffee prices rose to<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/coffee\"><u>&nbsp;$2.29 per pound,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;a positive push for exporters in Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though lower than the April 17, 2024\u2019s high of $2.48 a pound, the price surpasses that of the entire second half of 2023. During this second half, the price had peaked at $2.10 a pound on December 14.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global prices have been improving after supplies took a hit due to drought in production leaders, Brazil and Vietnam. For this reason, Peru is specially benefiting from low global supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leaf-rust-and-farmers-challenges\"><strong>Leaf Rust and Farmers\u2019 Challenges<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, national production is up amid a decade-long leaf rust disease that has affected a slither of the coffee area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to FSA, Peru recovered 3.95 million bags from the disease in the 2023-24 season, 9% more year-on-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a promising outlook given that since 2013, coffee rust has infected 40% of Peru\u2019s coffee plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, family growers who make up the bulk of production continue to face low credit ratings and benefit little from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/peru\/coffee\/\"><u>high prices.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To circumvent this challenge, growers are forming cooperatives, which receive better prices than individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exports-stable\"><strong>Exports Stable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As growers continue to face remuneration and disease odds, exports remain stable in the 2024-25 season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recipients of these green beans are in the U.S., who command 28% of Peru\u2019s organic coffee exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Union comes second in these single-origin imports, with German importing 18% and Belgium 9%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, despite farmers\u2019 worries and disease challenges,&nbsp;Peru\u2019s organic coffee sector expects both yield and export increment. As the following statistics show, there is more than meets the eye in the Andes\u2019 country\u2019s key agricultural export.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-peru-coffee-statistics\"><strong>Peru Coffee Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru ranked the ninth largest producer of coffee worldwide in 2022 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datapandas.org\/ranking\/coffee-production-by-country\"><u>323,300 tonnes,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;216,000 tonnes of which was Arabica. The South American nation ranked 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Arabica production worldwide in the 2022-23 season, beaten by the likes of Brazil. Exports from coffee reached&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=With%20a%20total%20of%20216%2C000%20tons%20in%20the,Coffee%20Day%20\u2014celebrated%20every%20fourth%20Friday%20of%20August.\"><u>$1.236 billion<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2022, a yearly rise of 37.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who grows coffee in Peru?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small-scale farmers cultivate 95% of Peru&#8217;s coffee. The farmers produce&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycoffeenews.com\/2024\/06\/04\/peru-coffee-report-production-up-though-organic-challenges-persist\/\"><u>75%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of the coffee in the Andes highlands between 1,000 and 18,000 m above sea level. &nbsp;These areas include San Martin, Amazonas, Cusco and Junin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much coffee do Peruvians drink per capita?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since almost all of coffee produced in Peru goes into export, domestic coffee consumption is low.
