{"id":20500,"date":"2024-06-04T13:38:11","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T13:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20500"},"modified":"2024-06-04T13:38:13","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T13:38:13","slug":"vietnams-coffee-sector-prepares-for-eus-anti-deforestation-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/06\/04\/vietnams-coffee-sector-prepares-for-eus-anti-deforestation-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Vietnam\u2019s coffee sector prepares for EU\u2019s anti-deforestation law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/vietnam\/coffee\/\"><u>Vietnam\u2019s coffee<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;stakeholders have begun tracking 0.5 million small-scale farmers, months before the industry-affecting EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) materializes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a June 1, 2024 report on The Star Malaysia, Vietnam cannot delay certifications as it exports<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/focus\/2024\/06\/01\/reorder-in-the-world-of-coffee\"><u>&nbsp;40%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of its coffee to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, the country has been promoting sustainable plantation agriculture since August 2023, which means that farmer traceability will be easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 29, 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development had even organized a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eudr-coffee-vietnam_en?s=184\"><u>Deforestation-free coffee production\u201d<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the conference, Vietnam pledged to survey the coffee belt in the Central Highlands and register growers at the farm level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anti-deforestation-law-s-preparedness\"><strong>Anti-deforestation Law\u2019s Preparedness<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulation will likely spur searches for new export markets by countries with low preparedness or that lack traceability systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Vietnam, most tropical sources of coffee have no farm-level systems in place to trace sustainable cultivation. One of these is Peru whose portion of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwfca.org\/en\/the_24_main_deforestation_fronts_in_the_world\/\"><u>Mayan forest<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;is among the world\u2019s top deforested zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, EUDR requires the proof of deforestation-free origins of coffee, cocoa, rubber, beef and other commodities in the European market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulation passed into law in April 2023 and it will come into effect on December 30, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Processors of products that the regulation covers must trace them to sustainable origins before they can sell inside the EU. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-europe-2nd-biggest-deforestation-importer\"><strong>Europe 2nd Biggest Deforestation \u201cImporter\u201d<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Europe grows very little coffee in Canary Islands, it is nevertheless the second biggest contributor of tropical deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Europe led to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.eu\/?2831941\/EU-consumption-responsible-for-16-of-tropical-deforestation-linked-to-international-trade\"><u>16%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of deforestation in the tropics in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, the EU contributed to 203,000 hectares of tropical forest encroachment and 116 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soybean, palm and beef production activities lead in Western-affiliated deforestation, followed by cocoa and coffee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, the EU launched the hashtag \u201cTogether4Forests\u201d &nbsp;in 2020, which drew 1.2 million members worldwide and helped hatch EUDR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coffee-production-down-20-in-vietnam\"><strong>Coffee Production Down 20% in Vietnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even as Europe is cutting its share in deforestation, Vietnam is dealing with a production dip due to climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A May 29, 2024 ministerial report indicated that Vietnam\u2019s 2023-24 coffee production fell by 20% and brought a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/02\/21\/farmers-comfort-zone-durian-coffee-and-rice-prices-up-in-vietnam\/\"><u>price hike<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The south-east Asia nation produces most of its coffee through small-scale farmers who produce 85% of its coffee beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the following statistics show, registering these farmers is important as they contribute to growing export revenue from coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vietnam-coffee-statistics\"><strong>Vietnam Coffee Statistics<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnam is the world\u2019s second biggest coffee-producing nation, producing between<a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/economy\/1795329\"><u>&nbsp;1.75 and 1.85 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;per year. &nbsp;In 2022, the country ranked third after Brazil and Colombia in total coffee bean exports worth $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1096413\/main-export-countries-for-coffee-worldwide\/\"><u>3.3 billion<\/u><\/a>. As a whole, coffee exports account for 10% of the total export income by the south-east Asia country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the total plantation area of coffee in Vietnam?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnam had the world\u2019s 8<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;biggest harvested coffee area in 2022 at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/279162\/top-countries-worldwide-based-on-coffee-area-harvested\/\"><u>655,920 hectares<\/u><\/a>.
