They cited the variety\u2019s genetically modified (GMO) effect on human health and the loss of plant biodiversity for their opposition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling therefore gives the anti-GMO campaigners an edge over \u201cgolden rice\u201d backers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such winner is Greenpeace South-East Asia, which called the verdict a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/opinion\/comment\/2024\/05\/30\/why-the-battle-for-golden-rice-has-gone-off-the-boil\/\"><u>monumental win<\/u><\/a>\u201d for farmers and anti-GMO campaigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its part, the Humanitarian Board of \u201cgolden rice\u201d termed the decision \u201calarming\u201d as the variety could have saved lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the government approved the strain as an alternative Vitamin A source for children from the bottom 40% of the country\u2019s poorest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before its ban, the variety had been thriving in greenhouses, especially in&nbsp;Laguna Province&nbsp;in the scenic Luzon island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-golden-rice\"><strong>Golden Rice<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As growers in Los Banos in Laguna lose their cultivation rights, here is a profile of this new strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Golden rice is a bio-engineered variety of common rice (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/poaceae\/oryza-sativa\/\"><u>Oryza sativa<\/u><\/a>) with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11880581\/\"><u>beta-carotene<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the edible grain. Though some plants have this compound, it is usually in their non-edible parts, hence the importance of this rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI),&nbsp;common rice actually<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irri.org\/golden-rice-faqs\"><u>&nbsp;lacks<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;beta-carotene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGolden rice\u201d research began in the 1980s through the Rockefeller Foundation, the University of Freiburg and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Thereafter, research continued for 8 straight years in the 1990s, culminating in a breakthrough new grain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2000s,&nbsp;rice-dependent nations including the Philippines, Bangladesh and Indonesia&nbsp;received donations of the new strain\u2019s copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines approved farming of the variety in 2021 while Bangladesh is still planning endorsement at an unspecified date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, as the \u201cgolden rice\u201d debate cools in the Philippines, the country continues to meet rice demand by other means. To know how this is happening, below are some statistics on local rice production and consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-philippines-rice-statistics\"><strong>Philippines Rice Statistics&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Quarter 1, 2024, the Philippines produced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/psa.gov.ph\/statistics\/crops\/palay-rice-production-prices\"><u>5.23 million tonnes\u00a0<\/u><\/a>of palay rice, 5% above Q1, 2023\u2019s 4.98 million tonnes. \u00a0However, this value is not enough to meet domestic demand. With the 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0highest rice per capita in the world of\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=Historically%2C%20rice%20consumption%20per%20capita%20in%20Philippines%20reached,follow%20in%20terms%20of%20rice%20consumption%20per%20capita.\"><u>190 kg\u00a0<\/u><\/a>in 2021, the Philippines usually supplements local production with imports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u2019s forecast 2023\/24 rice imports by the Philippines at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/philippines-rice-imports-idINL4N3AQ2YE\/\"><u>\u00a03.8 million tonnes<\/u><\/a>, the world\u2019s highest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the rank of the Philippines in global rice production?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of production, the Philippines emerged the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0biggest rice-producing nation in 2021 at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/rice-production-by-country\"><u>19.96<\/u><\/a>\u00a0million tonnes.
