So far, the largest recorded paddlefish came out in March 2024 in the neighboring state of Missouri, at&nbsp;<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>164 pounds<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-paddlefish-are-sturgeon-lookalikes\"><strong>Paddlefish are Sturgeon Lookalikes<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paddlefish are \u201cliving fossils\u201d that have inhabited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/05\/01\/study-finds-u-s-reservoirs-home-to-7-6-billion-pounds-of-fish\/\"><u>American waters<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for 125 million years. They have a striking resemblance to sturgeons and their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/caviar\/\"><u>caviar\u00a0<\/u><\/a>is as costly as sturgeon\u2019s at $320 per pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;Andrew Branson, a specialist at&nbsp;the Missouri Department of Conservation, the fish has&nbsp;<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>a paddle<\/u><\/a>-like&nbsp;rostrum or snout similar to a sturgeon\u2019s. &nbsp;However, it has a streamlined mostly scale-free cartilage body like that of a shark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paddlefish inhabit the Lake of Ozarks in Missouri as well as Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers in Dakota territory. They also thrive on fish farms, especially around the Missouri river delta.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conservation-and-licensing\"><strong>Conservation and Licensing<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For preservation reasons, the state of North Dakota only offers a limited fishing period of two weeks per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvesters buy a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gf.nd.gov\/fishing\/paddlefish-snagging\"><u>tag&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>to stick on their harvests that cost $10 per resident fisherman. Out-of-state harvesters have to apply for a $25.50 licence to fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The North Dakota fisheries authorities also monitor catch-and-release reports from recreational fishermen to ascertain paddlefish numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service keeps a track of the number of releases to denote seasonal conservation status.
