This at a time when agriculture is helping Nigeria\u2019s economy grow by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/01\/16\/world-bank-cites-agriculture-will-propel-nigerias-economy-by-3\/\"><u>&nbsp;3%<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kano State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) stated April 29, 2024 that it would restore a million hectares in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, the Project Coordinator at ACReSAL in Kano, the initial phase has already began on 10,000 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon restoration, these idle farmlands will soon be \u201chanded back to farmers\u201d to enhance local food production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Nigeria is prone to desertification due to many economic activities such as&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=Climatic%20variability%2C%20deforestation%2C%20extensive%20cultivation%2C%20overgrazing%2C%20cultivation%20of,were%20identified%20as%20th\"><u>grazing, faulty irrigation and fuel gathering<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, ACReSAL also commits to ensure that farmers plant trees in the lands that the state restores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing the restoration work will be the fast and efficient&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/27\/climate-change-kano-fao-begin-restoration-of-3000-degraded-land\"><u>Delphino machine,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;which works better than tractors in land preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FAO is taking the initiative to train operators of this specialized equipment to ensure efficiency and thorough preparation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of the Delphino machines will be farmers who will receive free seeds, fertilizers and inputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-degraded-farmland-affects-62-million-nigerians\"><strong>Degraded Farmland Affects 62 Million Nigerians<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This project comes at a time when 62 million people in northern Nigeria are in the direct path of desertification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around<a href=\"#:~:text=Climatic%20variability%2C%20deforestation%2C%20extensive%20cultivation%2C%20overgrazing%2C%20cultivation%20of,were%20identified%20as%20th\"><u>&nbsp;580,841 km<\/u><u><sup>2<\/sup><\/u><\/a><sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;out of the country\u2019s total land mass of 927,892 km<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;is vulnerable to desertification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2018, a fifth of Nigeria\u2019s land was highly vulnerable to degradation and most of it lay across 15 states.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cocoa-agroforestry\"><strong>Cocoa Agroforestry<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Farming of land-intensive crops such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/produce\/processed\/nigeria-cocoa-beans\/\"><u>cocoa<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the south is also leading to forest encroachment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, Nigeria is one of the signatories among 32 nations in Africa of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/afr100.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-11\/FOREST%20LANDSCAPE%20RESTORATION%20AND%20COCOA%20AGROFORESTRY%20SYSTEMS%20IN%20AFRICA.pdf\"><u>African Landscape Restoration Initiative<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(AFR100). The initiative aims to regrow 128 million hectares in degraded agricultural areas by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the successes of the program so far is the growing footprint of the cocoa agroforestry method to restore forests.
