In 2020, for instance, fishermen caught<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/resource\/document\/fisheries-united-states-2020\"><u>&nbsp;8.4 billion pounds<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of fish in commercial fisheries such as the Atlantic and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/04\/22\/us-congress-considers-600-million-to-boost-u-s-tuna-fisheries-in-south-pacific\/\"><u>Pacific oceans<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the original report on the journal&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>&nbsp;on April 24,<a href=\"#Fig3\"><u>&nbsp;3.5 billion kg<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of fish lie underutilized in national reservoirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In surveying 301 artificial reservoirs, UC researchers consulted historical data from the U.S. Army corps of Engineers dating from the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-southern-u-s-reservoirs-have-most-fish\"><strong>Southern U.S.\u2019 Reservoirs Have Most Fish<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The study finds that southern reservoirs have the bulk of fish, totaling 1.92 billion kg, equivalent to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucdavis.edu\/climate\/news\/us-reservoirs-hold-billions-pounds-fish\"><u>4.2 billion pounds<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other 1.51 billion kg (3.32 billion pounds) of fish come from northern, western and eastern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Oklahoma and South Dakota lead with average 100 million kg or 220 million pounds of fish apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However it is Louisiana, Maryland, Illinois, Alabama and Indiana that harbor the most fish per capita. The per capita measure indicates the average fish population per the size of the reservoir area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-reservoirs-are-in-the-u-s\"><strong>How Many Reservoirs are in the U.S.?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The above 301 reservoirs represent only a fraction of freshwater sources in the United States that include lakes and natural watersheds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. has\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwrfc.noaa.gov\/info\/water_cycle\/hydrology.cgi\">2700 reservoirs<\/a><\/u>,\u00a0featuring lakes less than 5000 acre-feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of this number, 50,000 are between 50 and 5000 acre-feet in storage capacity and are either artificial or natural.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides these reservoirs, homes around the United States have dug around 2 million ponds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not all watersheds harbor fish, they nevertheless show the underutilized fish volumes that U.S.\u2019 reservoirs could be hiding. Their discovery could help expand fishing in the country.
