The program is a sponsorship of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By April 2024, EU-STREIT PNG had&nbsp;already mapped hundreds of individual farmers\u2019 spice on a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcourier.com.pg\/vanilla-dreams-to-digital-realms-empowering-papua-new-guineas-farmers-for-global-success\/\"><u>dedicated webpage<\/u><\/a>. Here, rural growers can market their vanilla beans to lucrative international markets, a fete unknown before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This digital marketing has also enabled youthful farmers from Mandi, a village in Wewak, find direct market in Australia. Their second export since they launched a webpage has earned them<a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcourier.com.pg\/vanilla-dreams-to-digital-realms-empowering-papua-new-guineas-farmers-for-global-success\/\"><u>&nbsp;21,000 kino<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($5,500) from 70 kg of vanilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hitherto, the nearest local farmers could sell their spice in a foreign market was in neighboring Indonesia at uncompetitive domestic rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, PNG\u2019s Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru in March 2024 proposed the establishment of an international price-setting association.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If formed, the association will set and maintain prices that reflect the quality and sustainability of vanilla beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-world-price-volatility\"><strong>World Price Volatility&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanilla is perhaps the most volatile spice globally and its price can shuttle from<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5308143\/vanilla-price-climate-change-madagascar\/\"><u>&nbsp;$20 to $600&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>per kilogram, seasonally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments often set a price benchmark for export that is often higher than market prices (wholesale or retail). For instance, between 2020 and 2023, Madagascar set an export minimum price of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mintecglobal.com\/top-stories\/madagascar-lifts-minimum-export-price-on-vanilla\"><u>&nbsp;$250 per kg&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>to maintain farmers\u2019 earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PNG, unlike Madagascar, does not set minimum export prices but rather depends on those of international markets. In May 2023, for example,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/papua-new-guinea\/vanilla\/\"><u>PNG\u2019s vanilla<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;sold at the world average of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcourier.com.pg\/pngs-vanilla-crop-ranks-second-best-globally-report\/\"><u>1200 kino<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($400) against Madagascar\u2019s $550 a kilo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-of-the-world-s-supplies\"><strong>10% of the World\u2019s Supplies<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PNG produces&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/one-country-one-priority-product\/asia-pacific\/papua-new-guinea\/en\"><u>10%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the world\u2019s vanilla beans per year, according to early 2024 statistics by FAO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is all the more reason for starting digital marketing platforms to ensure that farmers benefit from this high production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, &nbsp;the country produced 495 tonnes of raw vanilla beans with a market value of<a href=\"#:~:text=Based%20on%20recent%20research%2C%20PNG%20is%20estimated%20to,PNG%20was%20valued%20at%20K29.9%20million%20in%202023.\"><u>&nbsp;K29.9 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($7.61 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanilla farming in Papua New Guinea supports 17,000 small-scale farmers based mostly in East and West Sepik provinces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Farmers in the vanilla belt of Wewak have benefited from an international initiative to digitize vanilla farming in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
