Peach trees require around 1000 cool hours per season, averaging between 32 and 45\u00baF. After this, the blossoms bud under warming conditions. An abnormally warm winter can accelerate bud formation even before trees attain the minimum of 1000 chill hours. If a late freeze comes during this premature budding stage, it stunts the fruits, a situation that occurred in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 is different in that the Peach State had received between 800 and 1200 chill hours by mid-February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Georgia Peach Council\u2019s marketing director Will McGehee, speaking to&nbsp;<em>The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em>, Georgia has \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/business\/georgia-peach-blueberry-and-citrus-growers-predict-good-crop-after-cold-snap-scare\/ENTY6N72SZBI5GR4BE6BPTQQNI\/\"><u>&nbsp;a full crop<\/u><\/a>\u201d this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, there were no reports of climatic damage of budding peaches in the state &nbsp;throughout March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Georgians are trialing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newswire.caes.uga.edu\/story\/10401\/2024-peach-season.html\"><u>anti-freeze protection&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>methods, including chemicals that can postpone budding until winter is past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-peach-state-s-peaches-rank-nationally\"><strong>How do Peach State\u2019s Peaches Rank Nationally?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to a $34 million peach industry (2022 statistics), Georgia is among the top 4 peach-producing states in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its \u201cPeach State\u201d moniker, it lags behind California, South Carolina and New Jersey in peach production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual production is usually in the margins of<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.uga.edu\/topic-areas\/fruit-vegetable-ornamentals-production\/peaches.html\"><u>&nbsp;130 million pounds<\/u><\/a>, per University of Georgia data.
