{"id":20220,"date":"2024-04-15T09:57:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T09:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20220"},"modified":"2024-04-15T10:02:34","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T10:02:34","slug":"snow-crab-season-in-labrnewfoundland-and-labrador-lands-at-ca3-pound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/04\/15\/snow-crab-season-in-labrnewfoundland-and-labrador-lands-at-ca3-pound\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow crab season in Newfoundland and Labrador lands at CA$3\/Pound"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following a week\u2019s delay, the snow crab season in Newfoundland and Labrador province in Canada is finally underway after a landing price increment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 14, 2024, the Fish, Food &amp; Allied Workers (FFAW) announced a settlement\u00a0with the Association of Seafood Producers (ASP)\u00a0of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/ffaw-and-asp-reach-agreement-to-start-snow-crab-fishery\/ar-BB1lCaMP\"><u>\u00a0CA$3\u00a0<\/u><\/a>(US$2.18) a pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, the union will back its workers to find buyers for not only snow crabs but other crab species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FFAW also cited the likelihood of a floor price improvement when the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/canada\/crab\/\"><u>retail price<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;appreciates later in the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By gifting its fishermen a lucrative 50% of the seafood processing factories\u2019 price, the union has rekindled hope in a struggling industry. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a gesture of hope, the union shelved a planned protest in front of the Confederation Building in St. John\u2019s city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-protest-timeline\"><strong>Protest <\/strong>Timeline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the ground, the price raise has met with renewed activity from crabbers who had been striking since April 6. They have been demanding a landing price raise to recover from a poor run in an overstocked 2023 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their strike began when the Labrador and Nova Scotia Price Setting Panel selected&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/a-fish-harvester-s-protest-threatens-newfoundland-and-labrador-s-crab-season-again-1.6842151?cid=sm%3Atrueanthem%3Actvlethbridge%3Apost\"><u>$2.60 a pound<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;(US$1.89) as 2024\u2019s floor price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FFAW had backed its workers by proposing a payment of CA$3 (US$2.18) per pound whenever market prices reached C$7.01 (US$5.09). However, ASP had countered for a landing price below this figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 protest has ended faster than that of 2023 which pushed the snow crab season well into May. In 2023, fishermen were against a floor price of $2.20 a pound. The overstocked season also saw the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/newfoundland-labrador\/crab-dumping-increase-2023-1.6979682\"><u>&nbsp;dumping of 300,000 pounds&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of crab by harvesters due to their poor quality amid warming waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 2, 2024, an analyst had remarked that fishermen might lose C$30 million (US$167.23 million) without a pay rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, fishermen are already back to their traps to launch the&nbsp;snow crab season in Newfoundland and Labrador in earnest. They are in to land 34,603 pounds of snow crab this season, 13% more than &nbsp;the 2023 quota, per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca\/fisheries-peches\/decisions\/fm-2024-gp\/atl-06-eng.html\"><u>government&#8217;<\/u><\/a>s estimates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following a week\u2019s delay, the snow crab season in Newfoundland and Labrador province in Canada is finally underway after a landing price increment.
