{"id":20130,"date":"2024-03-22T14:07:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20130"},"modified":"2024-03-22T14:07:40","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:07:40","slug":"free-cold-storage-reduces-post-harvest-losses-for-zanzibars-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/03\/22\/free-cold-storage-reduces-post-harvest-losses-for-zanzibars-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Free cold storage reduces post-harvest losses for Zanzibar\u2019s farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A free training and cold storage project involving 50 farmers and 20 traders has reduced post-harvest losses in some parts of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/produce\/tanzania\/\"><u>Zanzibar<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is a partnership between Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and&nbsp;State University of Zanzibar (SAZU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on March 21 at SUA grounds,&nbsp;the Dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences at SAZU, Dr. Abdallah Rashid Mkumbukwa, praised the undertaking for reducing fruit and vegetable losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this localized success, he requested more funding to roll out the 120 million-shilling ($46,872) project across Tanzania.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaboration entitled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailynews.co.tz\/zbar-reduces-post-harvest-losses-in-fruits-vegetables\/\"><u>Innovative Free-Energy Technologies for Reducing Postharvest Losses of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;lasted &nbsp;5 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the funding of a parastatal, the project trained 70 small family growers and traders through its 52-month course. It also constructed a free coolant for fresh produce in three villages in Western Zanzibar and another in Ugunja island\u2019s market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In mainland Tanzania, some areas including Arusha to the north and Morogolo to the east have also embraced the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr. Suleiman, a lecturer at SUA, fruit and vegetable wilt or rot remains a major challenge not only in Africa but worldwide. He cited a 50%post-harvest loss magnitude globally and up to 55% in Africa alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-agricultural-portrait-of-zanzibar\"><strong>Agricultural Portrait of Zanzibar<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Zanzibar is the most densely populated region in East Africa with 530 individuals per square kilometre, courtesy the 2012 census.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its land area is mainly a lowland with mild tropical-humid conditions that nurture most tropical produce. Key produce include rice and maize, &nbsp;tubers like cassava and its most renowned spice, cloves. In spite of its coastal way of life, Zanzibar thrives on smallholder agriculture. Agriculture accounts for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcinfo.org\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/ipcinfo\/docs\/IPC_Tanzania_Zanzibar_AcuteFI_Report_2017JulySept.pdf\"><u>&nbsp;70%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the island\u2019s commodity exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to its small size of 2,642 square kilometers across the main islands of Pemba and Ugunja, Zanzibar\u2019s farms are small-scale. Each family averages 0.25 hectares of farmland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main agricultural exports have changed hands during the past centuries. While before the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century ivory and cloves held sway, in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century cloves, fish and raffia raise the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, clove exports totaled&nbsp;<a href=\"#google_vignette\"><u>6,452.8 tonnes<\/u><\/a>, 2,946 tonnes more than in 2021. This is however a depreciation from previous years due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/produce\/spices-and-herbs\/tanzania-cloves\/\"><u>clove value&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>depreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, cloves are some of the crops that demand proper post-harvest conditions as temperature above 21\u00baC lead to aroma loss.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A free training and cold storage project involving 50 farmers and 20 traders has reduced post-harvest losses in some parts of&nbsp;Zanzibar.
