Focus now shifts to some other of Wisconsin\u2019s specialty crops, which will be in bloom this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the harvest of wild ginseng lasts two months between September 1 and November 1, the legal sale period extends for 6 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialty crops on the other hand have a relaxed harvest duration and an unlimited commercial period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these specialty crops include fresh flowers, maple syrup and early season asparagus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maple-syrup\"><strong>Maple Syrup<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wisconsin maple syrup season is something to celebrate because it marks the transition between winter and spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/03\/08\/pennsylvania-maple-syrup-season-continues-after-early-thaw\/\"><u>Pennsylvania,<\/u><\/a>\u00a0whose season began February 23, the Midwest harvest began early this season due to warming weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People in Wisconsin started tapping sap a month earlier than usual as day temperatures hovered above 40\u00baF. The fluctuation in early spring temperatures speeds up the conversion of sugar into sap inside maples as an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/maple-syrup-warmer-unpredictable-winters-climate-change-8c6dfbb575f1e1c2256aa57efb685697\">antifreeze<\/a> measure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvesters normally bleed the tree\u2019s skin to collect the sap, which they then boil to make maple syrup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective maple syrup bounty hunters can continue tapping till April when the sap ceases to flow till next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cut-blooms\"><strong>Cut Blooms<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wisconsin also boasts some short-season cut flowers for specialty crop enthusiasts. These bloom from early spring through late summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daffodils, tulips, dahlias and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wtaq.com\/2024\/03\/13\/on-the-road-with-alice-specialty-crops-make-wisconsin-agriculture-special\/\"><u>snapdragons<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;are some of the season\u2019s favorites, as all are adapted to the local climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlia is among the more difficult to plant for it loves sunny weather and Wisconsin is plagued by long winters. \u00a0However, Zone 5 in the south provides good conditions for the flower in the short duration between spring and summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlias are consumer favorites because they are affordable at around $25 for three 10-stem bunches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asparagus-in-april\"><strong>Asparagus in April<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all Wisconsin\u2019s specialty crops apart from ginseng, asparagus is the most rewarding in terms of perennial productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year between April and June, farmers can expect a 60-day harvest period which recurs annually for over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vegento.russell.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/01\/asparagus-UWHort.pdf\"><u>40 years<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late spring, harvesters in most zones of this state harvest the 10-inch spears as they peek out of the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, as the commercial period of wild ginseng ends in Wisconsin, &nbsp;traders can count on other premium crops.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2023-24 yearly license to\u00a0sell wild ginseng\u00a0in Wisconsin between\u00a0September 1 and March 31\u00a0is about to end.
