{"id":20066,"date":"2024-03-13T13:34:44","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T13:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20066"},"modified":"2024-03-13T13:37:09","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T13:37:09","slug":"papua-new-guinea-is-replenishing-ageing-oil-palm-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/03\/13\/papua-new-guinea-is-replenishing-ageing-oil-palm-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Papua New Guinea is replenishing ageing oil palm trees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Papua New Guinea is committing&nbsp;K3.5 million ($903,350) to various mills to procure oil palm seedlings and phase out ageing trees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oil palm (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/arecaceae\/elaeis-guineensis\/\"><u>Elaeis guineensis)<\/u><u>&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>tree, not only echoes the&nbsp;Pacific island\u2019s own name but remains the country\u2019s main national export.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the oil palm industry contributed K2.8 billion ($722.7 million) to the national GDP of K115.2 billion ($30.63 billion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ageing-oil-palms\"><strong>Ageing oil palms<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, however, production has dropped due to the ageing of the trees, whose economic lifespan is 25 to 30 years. &nbsp;After this age, most trees become too tall to climb and farmers must cut them down and plant new ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Papua New Guinea\u2019s intervention is through the supply of free seedlings to mills, which in turn disburse them to farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, two major mills received K864,000 ($222,998) to purchase 72,000 seeds to cover their respective 600 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oil palm seeds are expensive, hence the Oil Palm Ministry\u2019s replanting fund known as the National Oil Palm Intervention Programme (<a href=\"https:\/\/png-data.sprep.org\/group\/15\"><u>NOPIP)<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Papua New Guinea\u2019s Prime Minister James Marape noted on March 11 that NOPIP will recover productivity by replacing ageing trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcourier.com.pg\/marape-government-commits-to-strengthening-pngs-oil-palm-industry-with-k3-5-million-intervention\/\"><u>\u201cAgeing of palm trees&#8230;(have contributed to)&#8230;declining production levels<\/u><\/a>.\u201d He stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-expensive-seeds\"><strong>Expensive Seeds<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The scheme will also save palm oil farmers from the current seed expense of K18 ($4.65) per piece.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smallholders comprise&nbsp;35%&nbsp;of all growers for this key crop while large plantations account for 65%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the government is only offering top grade seeds, the seemingly high per unit price is relevant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, there is a promise of profit in Papua New Guinea\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/papua-new-guinea\/palm-oil\/\"><u>palm oil prices<\/u><\/a>\u00a0which influence the global equivalent. Global prices based on the Malaysian benchmark stood at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/commodities\/palm-oil-price\"><u>MYR 4,200<\/u><\/a>\u00a0per tonne ($896.28) or $0.9 per liter on March 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-multinational\"><strong>New Multinational<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the price factor, a major agribusiness multinational has entered the oil palm sector with a promise to improve productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilmar International Ltd got a nod this March&nbsp;from the Oil Palm Ministry to join the industry. The company has already invested&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.com.pg\/oil-palm-minister-sees-partnership-with-overseas-firm-as-key\/\"><u>K300 million<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;($77.4 million) in local grains but wants to venture into the vegetable oil business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside crushing oilseeds for farmers across many developing nations, this multinational is also among the world\u2019s largest oil palm growers.
