{"id":20042,"date":"2024-03-08T13:49:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T13:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=20042"},"modified":"2024-03-08T13:49:50","modified_gmt":"2024-03-08T13:49:50","slug":"georgias-vidalia-onion-harvest-to-factor-in-1000-extra-acres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/03\/08\/georgias-vidalia-onion-harvest-to-factor-in-1000-extra-acres\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia\u2019s Vidalia onion harvest to factor in 1000 extra acres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The commercially significant packing date for Vidalia onions of April 17, 2024 will coincide with rising onion acreage in south Georgia, U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia&#8217;s Vidalia Onion Advisory Panel selected\u00a0the date after careful\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agr.georgia.gov\/pr\/vidalia-onions-headed-shelves-april-17-georgia-agriculture-commissioner-announces-official-pack\"><u>soil and weather measurements<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to determine maturity timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 harvest has the same timing as last year\u2019s but boasts 11,000 acres, a thousand more than in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such increase in area may rally the output of Georgia\u2019s number one vegetable, whose production decreased by 15% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multi-variety onion production in 2023 was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agfstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/misc\/FP_com\/2024\/02\/14\/Aciv.pdf\"><u>232 million pounds<\/u><\/a>\u00a0while the utilized production value was $159,000. \u00a0Despite falling below the 2022 margin, the 2023 revenue was however higher than the benchmark value in 2015 worth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.uga.edu\/publications\/detail.html?number=B1198\"><u>$138,000.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of this income derives from Georgia\u2019s short-season Vidalia onion variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-price-acreage-costs-rise\"><strong>Price, Acreage &amp; Costs Rise<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Acreage and price seem to have appreciated together in the past 9 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total area under Vidalia onions is nearing 12,000 acres thanks to advanced cold refrigeration that allows storage of the surplus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its part, the price of this sweet onion&nbsp;has almost doubled from rising costs of production between 2015 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2015-16 season, a 40-pound pack of Vidalia onions was worth from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/extension.uga.edu\/publications\/detail.html?number=B1198\"><u>$15 to $19,&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>against 2024\u2019s $35. Nationally,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/onions\/\"><u>U.S. onions<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;average up to $1.75 a pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also indicates that the Vidalia variety is more expensive than other onion cultivars that grow in Georgia. For instance, the cost in 2015 of red jumbo onions was just $8 per 25-ib pack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors that contribute to the rising expenditure include production and post-production spending as well as licensing fees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estimates by University of Georgia put production expenditure at around $1,520 per acre, while post-production eats up $2,923.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Licensing fees for growing this state-branded onion vary with the size of a farm. Farmers also have to register\u00a0for the April 17 onion sale before March 1 to avoid\u00a0a late registration penalty of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agr.georgia.gov\/vidalia-onions\"><u>$1000<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-history-of-vidalia-onions\"><strong>History of Vidalia Onions<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the most popular onion variety in Georgia and the United States, these onions have a rich history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first person to grow Vidalia onions was Mose Coleman at Toombs County, South Georgia in 1931.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of their mild quality, his short-season bulbs immediately became a hit with Depression period consumers.
